Holy fucking hell that is terrifying. Amazing that passengers sustained only minor injuries, I know that newer cars are designed to protect the occupants in a wreck but goddammit that's impressive.

That's happened in front of me once. By shear dumb coincidence I had just bought new tires and brakes the night before.

I was on the way in to work, cruising in the middle lane. An older, beat to hell Civic was passing me on the left. They get maybe 3/4 of a car length in front of me when the pass tire lets loose. The car goes down instantly, spins 90 degrees, and skids to a stop in my lane. Meanwhile I'm on the brakes, hard.

The whole time I have the stop pedal to the floor (few seconds, felt like ages) I'm staring at the passenger in the civic. She's staring at the Ram grille emblem that's maintaining a good two-foot distance from her face. By sheer luck, I get it stopped without making contact.

In the two seconds of quiet after that, the realization hit and she started bawling. I had to throw the truck into reverse and back off before moving it to the shoulder. It was close.

    Won't ever forget that stare.

Is that the brake rotor or the wheel's hub pad? Can't see how the rotor could come off without the caliper on it.

Love that channel. Good for a laugh... and makes you much more careful with random cars on the road like you said.

Highly recommend buying one even if its only a $80 one from Amazon, two years ago I sent my video to the other drivers insurance company and that got the ball rolling real quick after they had stalled for 4-5 days.
I recommend one that has a screen so you can show the police the video while your still at the scene.

When I was a kid there was a fatality in my home town because of this. A wheel came off of a vehicle on the interstate, bounced over the concrete divider wall, and into the windshield of an oncoming vehicle. Unfortunately my state still doesn't have vehicle inspections so it's something I'm paranoid about to this day. I get it. Inspections can be a racket and I haven't always been able to afford to maintain my vehicles as well as I would like. But I've seen clapped out Crown Vics with half their wheel studs gone and a couple of years ago I even saw an ambulance at a gas station with half it's lug nuts missing.

Seconded. I like one with wifi-connect. I can use my phone to pull screenshots so I have visual aids when talking about the stupidity of others. Sometimes I use it talk about my own stupidity.

My wif and I were traveling in New Mexico - just outside Ruidoso - and an oncoming dually pickup had a spare fall out the back (no tailgate). It was immediately punted by a trailing semi which flung it toward us - past the pick-up ( I think) but it stood up and rolled right at us anyway. At 65+, Deb neatly side stepped the thing faster than I could say "holy sh*t" - pure reflex I'm sure. Over in an instant. No one driving behind us or beside us.

Not all loose wheels fall off an axle - tie down or tether, loose wheels in your bed!

Is that a Chevy? Don’t think it’s a Tacoma. (Mirrors/emblem in middle of tailgate)

I've got cheap ones in all our vehicles. I don't need expensive cams, I'm not making youtube videos. Just want something in the event of a crash to prove my side of the story.

I really like the SJCAM cameras which are knockoffs of the GoPro. Not just crappy knockoffs though they are quite good and they offer a car mode for their "action" cameras which makes it function the same as dashcam.
The SJ4000 Wifi is $50 on Amazon and their better cameras are not significantly more expensive.

What I like is good image quality (better than most dashcams), and if you wish you can use the camera for other things too.

Two weeks ago my boss' boss found a lug nut on the ground just outside the front door to our offices, obviously fell off a rig in our parking lot. He's had it on his desk since then. Fast forward to yesterday, my boss walks into that office and realizes it is his own. He had just bought black lugs to replace his over the weekend, and the front passenger wheel was missing one... His dealer had just mounted new tires in the weeks before. I played them this video repeatedly after I found out.

Another story... luckily with no injuries or major damage... Before I was born, so late 70s/early 80s, my mother had the front passenger wheel come off her pickup. Watched as it left the freeway and bounced out across a farmer's field. To this day, they are sure it was their neighbor who always seemed to hate them. Shared a party line with them and would always listen in to my parents convos and such... creeper.... lol.

And finally, I'm sure I've got pics on here somewhere. I had a "tinkle" sound on my front passenger side and with the help of my wife figured it out. A lug nut had fallen off behind my wheel's center cover. One more had nearly come off, and 4 more were at 40ft/lbs. I had just had an oil change/tire rotation at my local dealer.

A cheap cam is better than no cam.

A middle-tier cam, one that can sense impacts when parked and can read a license plate in poor light, is better than a cheap cam.

Go with whatever gets the most value for you, there really are no wrong answers.
