    Along the bottom it's flat due to the frame. The top is wanting to have a curve. I'm not sure if the 1x1 between the 2x2 will keep it straight.

    Is it starting to present a ripple when you weld it? If so that is probably caused by the heat distribution in the metal and the cool down process.

    Try small tacks every 4 inches all the way around, then go back and weld.

    I would say lots of clamps, and spread your welding out, another thing you could if you have a air compressor is do a 1" stitch weld and immediately cool if with air, I've had good luck doing that when I worked on a chop top of a 50' Ford.
