So on way home from mountains today I noticed that after I would shift into say, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th and give it gas (steady acceleration), my motor or RPMS we're definately going, but I wasn't going any faster and speedometer needle wasn't going anywhere either. I'm no mechanic but I'm thinking hopefully just a clutch and nothing to do with the tranny. It's a 5 spd/2.7 Tacoma with 280K. Thing that gets me is it still shifts nice and smooth in every gear, no grinding or troubles. Any insight be greatly appreciated as to what it sounds like may be the problem and a good recommendation on an off road clutch.

It's not your transmission, your clutch is slipping. I have a 1995, 2.7L, 5-speed and I'm replacing my clutch right now so I'm here to read up on some tips. My clutch did the same thing on hills, mainly just as you're cresting the hill, right?

Sounds more like your flywheel is glazed, replace or resurface it when you replace the clutch as thats typically an overlooked item and not included in clutch kits.

Why does it sound like a glazed flywheel? He says it shifts smooth and without chattering. I'm on the fence about replacing my flywheel. It had a couple of glazed spots exactly level and across from each other. I hit the whole flywheel with my Dewalt orbital sander using 60 grit. It broke the glaze but I can still see some witnessing of the glazed areas. It never chattered, just slipped before I decided to replace the clutch. The clutch was new a couple of years ago.

Chatter is typically the clutch itself, if you are slipping all over then the flywheel does not have a good contact as in its glazed and slipping.

I am so thankful that you have made me decide to replace my own flywheel. Can you recommend a brand or should I go OEM?

OEM is fine as there is really a few options anyways, if you replace with an oem clutch stay oem flywheel.

I did just that 2 years ago and its still perfect with no slipping, the old 38lbs flywheel was glazed like a donut and the clutch was a dual stage high end one that was a pain in the ass to use as it was really grabby and jerky.

I still have my LCEngineering 38lbs flywheel in the closet, that thing is a beast!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I just went with a Marlin HD clutch kit and had my flywheel resurfaced locally for $35. A friend was fortunate enough to help me out and I think it took around 8 hours total. It was kind of being a pain in the ass here and there but wasn't to bad. It sure made a hell of a difference in power and hook up, chirping around street corners getting used to it haha.

Good price on the flywheel, honestly it should be done each clutch replacement or a full replacement flywheel, a lot of people skip it as again its not part of the clutch kit so it gets missed.

My stock one had 110k on it and I replaced it with a 38lbs one, so I needed to buy an OEM replacement last time, the 38 lbs one might go back in ... but id rather sell.
