Pretty sure these are original, ‘04 2.7 Prerunner. Only have about 1” of upward travel before LCA hits the frame. Might be explain why it rides like a Red Flyer wagon.

Thinking of going with Monroe quick-strut just to see what it does to ride height and not break the bank.

    Thoughts? Advice?

Take measurements from the center of the hub to the fender, IIRC should be about 20", and post them.

Center of the hub to bottom of the fender flare 21” on drivers side and 20-1/2” on passenger side.

    Edited for spelling

Ride height and wheel travel aside, 15yr old shocks will surely be pretty worn out if not completely shot. Your ride quality will definitely benefit from new shocks.

Rather than doing some cheap Monroe’s, why not grab some new take offs from a TRD OR? I sold mine to a 1G guy, entire setup minus UCA’s IIRC. Should be able to get all 4 shocks and coils for $150-200.

Well you kinda hit the nail on the head with “cheap Monroe’s”. I see them as a short-term solution that won’t break the bank until I decide what to do next, like lift or level or leave it.

I was was under the impression (not sure why) that 3rd gen coilovers would provide more lift than my stock CAs could handle. Is that not the case?

    You can’t put 2nd or 3rd gen struts on a 1st gen

Monroe quick struts work fine. I've put them on my friends Tacoma and girlfriends 4runner and they work just fine and return the trucks to factory ride hight. One set has 40000 miles on them and they are still perfectly fine

Good info but I am soooo confused. Monroe web site says their 171352 and 181352 will fit my ‘04 4 cyl EC. It also says they fit 6 cyl. I asked Monroe if there was a difference between shocks for 4cyl and 6cyl and they replied yes, spring rate and valving is different.
