Selling it when it before it starts costing you money? As much as a new truck note? Costing you that kind of money? Every month? Other than normal consumables, that 413,000 '93 T4R has cost me only two clutch jobs, one transmission job, three radiators/water pumps. Two timing belt jobs and two head jobs done dirt cheap, adjunct to two free head gasket jobs paid for by Toyota. All together in 28 years, about $5000 in "cost me money" expense. Comes to less than $15/month average. Had I replaced it every ten years with another one that would have been at least $80K for TWO T4Rs, PLUS interest for 8 years, plus comp and collision for ten years that it really didn't need it. Or put that in the stock market. I'll take an old Toyota, anytime.

Oh, and by the way...that '93 T4R is in high demand and is now appreciating in value, something long-term Toyota owners come to enjoy. Ask anyone who currently owns a 70's FJ, or an 80-90's Land Cruiser. People stop by here off and on trying to buy it off of me. No dice. Investment-grade appreciating asset.

Keep your truck. Maintain it. Twenty-five years from now when you look back and relive the memories of your kids growing up, everyone going to all the sports they participated in, you will come to realize that truck has become a prominent yarn in the fabric of your family's lives, as much as y'all's long-passed dogs are. Do not wager away that shared life experience so cheaply.

I'm looking at buying a 2nd gen for myself and to hand down to one of my kids in 4 years. I'm not afraid of maintenance and even rebuilt the battery pack on my 2006 prius. But, I have a solid relationship and take our toyotas into the shop for things they can do better or faster than me.

Looking at whats available around here, I see well maintained trucks with 175-225k miles and wondering what kind of big ticket work or really difficult to repair work I could expect pushing it to 300k.

    Thanks,

    Alan

My first Toyota truck a 1980 had 200k when I rolled it. My 87 had 230k when I traded it in. 100k is just getting broken in!

I've had my '09 taco for just under a year now. Only has about 155K miles on it and it still drives perfectly.

To the people that dissed this fellow Tacoma owner by saying he “wasn’t getting ahead of the game by trading in”:
You ALL forgot one thing.. He’d be saving all the money us Tacoma owners spend on the next mod. He’s fine as long as he doesn’t get another Tacoma!

OP: I know you were kidding, but don’t trade it in. Ever. Run it til it won’t run then buy another one!

Glad he was joking, if not he has no business on this forum! Ha! After I had my '92 & '06 people used to ask me if it was a good truck? I would reply ask me again in 20 years.
