I timed my cousins engine earlier this year, I did whole timing rebuild kit. But one of his friends screwed up the timing when replacing the oil pump, my question is, can I re-time the engine with just the upper timing cover off, or do I have take the entire thing apart again?
Thank you, Hope everyone had happy holidays

I already took the tensioner off and tried to re-time from the top, but I failed at re-timing it. how many times does the crank have to spin to match up with the cams?

Does it have the markings on the belt?

Once timed, the engine has to rotate 720 to line up the crank and cams to TDC #1

No bishop, it is one of those cheaper timing kits without the belt marks. the cams are aligned but the crank mark does not match up when I put the tensioner back on, and spin the motor around.

It doesn't matter about the marks on the belt. You simply put the crank pulley line on the line at 0* according to the little plastic cover thing. Then put your camshaft pulleys at the top cooresponding to the marks on the rear metal timing cover. Then put your belt on. Then spin it around and see if the cam pulleys line back up again on the next revolution. It's kinda tricky to get the cam pulleys lined up properly. You can do it!

Yeah, and what he said. One revolution around, it won't line back up again. if you put the belt on with crank up, and cam pulleys up, you're good. If you revolve the crank 1 revolution and the cam pulleys both line up, you are good.

Behind the plastic cover. Verify #1 cylinder is at top dead center with this line up.

With the crank on its marks just confirm you on top dead center and that #1 cylinder is up lineup your cam marks and you should be good.

Thanks for all your help. For future reference, it IS possible to time an engine with the top timing cover off only. I don't know why it didn't work the first time, must have been stressed out or something. All you have to do is take the tensioner completely(not fun if you have an a/c compressor) off. Then recompress the tensioner using a huge c-clamp or vise, and find a pin if you don't have a tensioner pin. I used a tiny allen key for this, nails, do not work, mechanic wire does not work either. realign the belt, then replace the tensioner pull the pin and fire it up. Awesome.
