While I was home getting some stuff for my job, I decided to start my 2001 Taco with the 3.4L V6. It started and fired for a split second, then died. I tried to restart a couple times and it would turn over normally but sounded like a sewing machine. It has 240k miles and had the timing belt replaced at 168k miles. I know it was getting close to another Timing belt replacement but I didn't think it would break this early. It was replaced with a Toyota OEM belt and water pump.
    2 questions:
    1) Are these motors non-intereference motors?
    2) If they are interference motors, would it be cheaper to rebuild the heads or get a used one?

    1. Non-interference. If it weren't, it would have sounded a lot worse than a sewing machine.:D
    2. Refer to 1.

I believe they are non-interference. You should be good, as long as everything is lined up right when the new belt is installed.

I won't be doing the belt myself. I will be taking it to my mechanic

They are non-interference, thankfully enough. Should be able to rebuild just fine. Good luck!

Got the estimate together guys. Sorry for the delay. Shop is busy.

You are looking at $500 if you want to go with a good Aisin kit. $450 if you want a cheaper kit. The Aisin kit is what I usually install in my customer's trucks.

They both come with water pumps, seals, gaskets, belt, pulleys, and tensioner for timing belt. Price is out the door, including labor, parts, and tax.
