Timing belt job. Do I need to replace hydraulic tensioner?

I'm gonna pay my mechanic $875, parts and labour for a timing belt job with oem parts. the only thing is they are leaving out the hydraulic tensioner. They're saying that it never goes bad. Should I pay extra to have it done anyways for peace of mind?

 

If it's inexpensive enough why not.

 

You can get an Aisin Kit that should have everything you need, timing belt, water pump and idler pulleys.

 

Why would you not change it while things are apart.

It is your vehicle do what your mechanic says though I am curious just how much money you will save .

 

It "never" goes bad because everyone replaces it when they do the belt. lol

 

I think that seems outrageously high of price to me. Sure prices have gone up the dealer charged us less than $300.00 both times I had it replaced. I think they changed the water pumps too at that price.
Could a dealer be that much more expensive now? Same year Tacoma, same engine.

 

That’s a fair price! But absolutely replace what you can with it all taken apart if your going in that far including all the belts

 

What you don't want to hear after it goes bad...

"Well, you should of just replaced it while you were in there, live and learn".

 

They’re replacing not just the timing belt, but other things that are accessible once torn down. Dealer quoted me $1300 for just the belt and pump.

 

My dealership changes me around 800.00 for labor and I buy all the OEM parts separately

 

The mechanic said this would be the Aisin kit. Should i try to nudge him down on price?

 

Absolutely not an "outrageous" quote. That's a little high for some regions... but low for others.

I can undoubtedly say... you did not get the Timing belt, water pump, and all of the recommended associated parts installed by a mechanic for $300

The parts are more than $300

 

High price for labor. I charge about $450.

 

Where are located? Do you have a shop?

 

Would you say that’s high for los angeles?

 

I buy my own parts and do the work myself. I'd rather buy the specialty tools than pay some idiot to do it and screw it up.

So, I'm not a good one to ask, because I wouldn't pay that.

BUT, I have seen many people on here talk about spending 850-1000 to have it done. (I also know, after doing the job 4 or 5 times now, it still takes the better part of 6 hours to take everything apart and put it back together)

100% replace the tensioner your already there it’s silly not to, with my customers if they don’t want to replace all the parts I don’t give them a warranty. I looked at the labor guide for you and replacing the :timing belt,water pump, crank seal, cam seals, belt tensioner is about 5.7hours so depending on what mechanics charge in your area per hour you can determine if that’s fair.
