    For Timing Chain and Gears, there are no prescribed replacement intervals; these components should be replaced as needed.

    i dont think there is a recommended schedule for it, although, i figure at 150k or so, it would probably be a good idea.

    I always thought that 2.7 engines needed the timing chain replaced at 100,000 miles. What is the recommended timing chain change interval?
    What experiences have people had with timing chains needing to be changed?

    A timing belt would need to be changed @ 120,000 miles.

    A chain lasts much longer. I have heard a chain should be changed around 250,000 miles.

    Hmm....I have only had to replace a chain one time. I know many that are over 300K, and one close to 600K. Thing is, The Toyota folks say the engines with a chain are "Engineered to go 250,000 miles before a major mechanical issue" arises. What that means is a grey area. IMHO.

    Thanks for a great sticky! Just turned 94k on my '05 and was concerned about the timing belt... and ready to shellout $200 at the dealer to replace. Called Dealer and was told it had a chain.. logged on TW to verify.. SWWWEEEET !!!

    I'm looking to buy an 07 FJ and I'm trying to figure out if the timing belt has been changed. I looked in the service guide and it recommends that timeimg belt be changed at 90k, which indicates there is a belt instead of a chain. I'm confused now :confused:
