So I'm at a loss here. I joined the Toyota family last year when i unfortunately inherited my Father's 2001 Tacoma SR5 4dr. Don't get me wrong i love the truck, i just didn't want it yet. would've gladly waited another 10 or 20 years to get it. but anyways the old man kept it in tip top shape. I am trying to do the same but this one is kicking my ass (mentally). My 16 yr old daughter was driving the other day and the timing belt broke on her. Once i took it apart this is what i got. And now I can't just call the old man and have him help me diagnose this CLUSTER F*CK.
My Question is How in the hell do i get the 3 pulleys to all be back in time with out damaging anything any further if there is any.

PS my daughter said she did try to start it after it died on her. Im not sure if that would have any made this problem any worse or not if the timing belt was already broke.

Any advice would help, Thanks Todd

First thing I would get a Haynes manual. While you’re at it replace the water pump also.

Got one. it doesn't have anything on a situation like this. at least not that I've found yet. Can i just move the cams independently to TDC or no?

Sorry to hear about this and completely understand on the rather have waited to get the thing. Anyway, welcome to TacomaWorld. Take a look at @turbodb's write up on the timing belt. Should be helpful.

    Here are the basic steps:

    1. Turn each cam gear indivuadually clockwise until its white mark is aligned with the mark on the block (i.e. straight up).

2.Turn the crank gear until its mark is also aligned with the mark on the block (i.e. straight up).

    3. Pull back the tension pulley and lock it in the retracted position with a small allen wrench or some such tool.

    4. Thread the belt in place.

    5. Remove the pin that's holding the tension pulley back and let the pully tension the belt.

    6. Now turn the crank clockwise two full revolutions and check the positions of all of the marks. They should all align with the marks on the block. However, they will move a bit away, but not anything like a tooth away.

These are very basic instructions to familiarize yourself before you dig into those videos.

And replace the water pump before rethreading the belt. No use in having to do the job over again.

Dude Skeezix, where have you been? that is exactly what I've been trying to find. step by step without the BS clear and concise.
Now what if when I attempted to turn both Cams individually neither would move very far and when i let off pressure they go back to where they started. I can't get them to move at all basically. within reason of course. I feel like i should just quit being lazy and take the top off and check the cams and all the other goodies in the head

100% agree. Exactly why I like @turbodb's writeup vs all the video hoopla. Some people are visual though so...

Make sure to update this thread as things progress. I'm sure we would all like to know what it takes to get it back up and running.

Isn't there a need to put #1 cyl to TDC, then verify the crank mark? Just because the mark is aligned doesn't mean it's not 180 out.

Or is my memory faltering? o_O

Just fyi the 3.4l is a non-interference engine, so the timing belt snapping isn't something to worry about damage-wise like it is on interference engines.

Oh Thank You tacoma gods!!! and engineers!! But really thanks eon blue, for the answer. Can't ever seem to find a straight answer on the interwebs these days.
Question, so i can just turn each cam individually clockwise until its aligned? the Crank is able to rotate normally but the cams are very hard to turn and i dont want to force it. honestly it feels like if i keep turning either of the cams something is gonna give. and probably not in a good way. I've never seen timing off this much with any model i've worked on. which isn't a ton, as i'm sure y'all can tell I'm not certified by ASE, ACE, ABC, none of 'em. Well I do have my Carpet Cleaning/Mold remediation Cert. from 2005ish so i think i'm well qualified to talk some BS on here.:smash::sorry::thumbsup:

    Thanks

As long as they are TDC, you're good to go (AFAIK). I've certainly turned them independently before and never run into an issue.

Turning the cams isn't smooth because the lobes are eccentric. They'll ramp up in pressure until they ca-chunk over. Make sure to turn everything clockwise, looking at the front.

You're overthinking it. Without the belt on everything is independent. Turn whatever you need to clockwise facing the motor from the front. The cams will want to flip into different positions as the cam lobes overcome valve spring tension. As you get close to lining up the timing marks you will find a sweet spot just before the cams want to flip over. If you're encountering crazy pressure while trying to turn one of the cams you're going to want to pull the cover and see what's going on. It shouldn't take a whole lot of pressure to turn them but it is a lot more then the crankshaft which spins freely.
