Timing Belt, Water Pump, etc Parts?

Thanks again for all the advice fellas. It took a little longer than I expected and I own a few more tools now, but I'm back on the road and the truck's running more smoothly than ever! FWIW the

$76 Schley 64400 – Harmonic Damper Pulley Holding Tool Compatible with Toyota 3.4L-V6

Schley 64400, Performance cam pulley tool and Lisle seal puller were indispensable doing this job. I could have pulled the seals using other methods, but am kicking myself for not owning one of these for the last decade. If you're on the fence about the Schley tool, get off and getcha one. The pulley tool I used the most and I mean a LOT. Don't know what I'd have done without that. Timmy the tool guy's videos came in REALLY handy too.

 

Oh, and I didn't have to pull the compressor to get to that rear tensioner bolt. You can use an extension and angle adapter with some electrical tape on it (thanks again Timmy) to get up in there from below. It's a squeeze, but will go when you find the spot. I was even able to get a torque wrench on it.

 

Sweet! For future searchers, it makes the job alot easier to pull the radiator out. Its an extra 10mins of work but it gives you a bunch more room to work with.

I'm about due to do this job again, I'll have to get that cam pulley tool.

 

Yeah, the radiator's pretty fast. 4 bolts & it pulls right up & out. A no-brainer for sure.

 

I think we should get a TW loaner out there circulating around - $90 for a tool you'll use every 100K is hard to swallow lol - there used to be a tool from east coast gear supply for the needle bearing in the front diff floating around like that.

I'll go halves with anyone that wants to put it into use like that...

 

I might be willing to do that. I haven't put enough miles on the job to be 100% confident I nailed it all, but have a good bit of driving coming up next week & will be a lot more confidant if I don't have any issues after some time has passed. Is there a tool pool for 1st gens?

It's going to be pretty tough to get me to loan out the cam pulley tool (unless it's local) plus it'd be expensive to ship - it's kinda big & heavy and really they're cheap enough; but the schley tool is pretty compact and could go via priority boxes or bags.

 

I only need the pulley tool - I figure half price $45 and then whoever wants it next just pays for shipping and so on. If you're interested we can start a thread gauging interest - like I said I remember there was a pool going around for the east coast gear supply tool that removes the needle bearing on the driver's side of the front diff. It was a one-time use tool and it was $50 or so, so people just sent it around to one another, but it unfortunately was lost at some point. I think most people only do the harmonic balancer when doing the timing belt - most people leave the cam seals, so most people would probably only want the crank pulley tool. Let me know what you think

 

I didn't use a cam pulley tool. I just cut the old timing belt, then wrapped it around both cam pulleys and used the center pulley for leverage. I ran it like the red line in this pic for the pass side. The lines on the pulleys are where I vice gripped the belt to the pulley.

This pic is the way I ran it to loosen the passenger side and also to tighten the driver side... I had no problem getting either bolt loose... or getting the proper torque to tighten.

 

I'll get back with ya once I'm feeling good about not needing it again for a while. Even if I do decide to hang on to it I won't leave ya hangin - you can use it.

Do you happen to know what the thread pitch/bolt size is for these? M8x1.25?

 

Yes, those are M8x1.25...they're around 100mm long....I just did this a couple weeks ago, and picked a couple up at the hardware store...I couldn't find any that long, I think the longest I could find were like 80mm long and they worked fine...and to be completely honest, I don't even think I needed the puller, I got everything on there ready to engage the puller and it just slid off

 

Actually I take that back looking on my pics, I did find and use a M8x1.25x100mm...it was the first hardware store I went to that had I think was 60 or 80mm longest, which I initially purchased but then made another run to another and found the 100mm.

 

Awesome. Thanks for the feedback. I am going to make a tool to keep the harmonic balancer from turning when I re-torque that crank bolt.

 

Depending on the tool you're making, this is how much the 100mm stick out; you may want something slightly shorter or longer... (this is from my timing belt write-up)
