If it's a non-interference engine...then why worry about it? Unless you are driving it across the country.

Well, I like to take my pickup where the nearest shop and person is very far far away..... That would be a hefty tow bill. Unless you fancy changing timing belts with the bears and wolves. ;). Repair at my local shop for the timing belt, water pump, belt, idler pulley, thermostat was 863.00 frog skins.

I have actually put timing belts on...."in the woods" twin cam on a Subaru. Not too bad one you realize you have to spin the engine 180 degree before you put the outer one on;)

I would change it to avoid being stranded. Years back I had a '94 Corolla wagon (1.8L non-interference) that dropped the timing belt (OEM AFAIK) at 142k miles and left me 60 miles from home costing $215 to get it towed home

Ha ha I bet that sucked...one time I broke one on a chevy spectrum...basically a Toyota ..I didn't have the tool to loosen the tensioner so I stretched it on, till I could start the car and use the side of hammer to slide it where it needed to be. I think I left the timing covers off for the rest of that cars life.:)

I had a friend who changed the timing belt on his VW Rabbit beside the road a couple of times. He carried an extra belt and waited until it broke.

    ...we'll get there.
    You all are crazy.

I'd rather do preventative with good beer on hand than have something take a shit on me when I'm ready to camp or have somewhere to get to.

Could I do it road side? Yeah. Do I want to? F no.

I'm not saying my way is better, I'll still stop and help...I just don't like the surprise

To answer the original question. I've never seen a broken timing belt on a Toyota. Although I have seen a couple Hyundai's and a Kia with shredded timing belts. I've got a friend with a 4.7L Tundra with over 230k on the OG belt. I told her she needs to change it ASAP! I changed mine at 85k because the truck was 13 years old...

    I am going for 300,000 miles !!

Very seldom do I drive more then 200 miles from home so no big deal to get the vehicle off the road .

Then get home get the Ford F250 and trailer and go get the vehicle with failed timing belt

I went to Michigan for one of my friends vehicles once to down near Charlotte NC for another

So I just completed the timing belt swap. The water pump was beginning to leak and there were signs of cracking on the timing belt itself, but it was in decent shape. I'm guessing the belt/water pump were OE...along with everything else (plugs, wires, accessory belts, etc) so I replaced almost everything outside of the motor. At 161K miles I'm pleasantly surprised how well everything had held up.
