Mine is leaking. Don't know when it stared but I'm at 77k. I wish this would fall under "recall" since it's obviously a common issue, and not some random fluke repair that falls under warranty like a tranny randomly imploding.

i dont think it would be a recall cuz its not so much a "safety" issue. like the pedals, or the spare tire cables, or some other part that may have a detrimental effect on the working condition of the vehicle. IMO.

It is a TSB in the US for up to 2008. Mine was repaired under powertrain warranty in a 2009. The TSB does not apply in Canada- have to go under powertrain warranty. I was told it was about $950 (9 hours) in labor charged to Toyota for the repair. I have also read that guys paid as much as $1500 if not under warranty. Might as well get it done while covered.

It doesn't sound like it drips into puddles on the ground in your parking spot either? If still in warranty then I might go ahead and get it done, but if it just accumulates grunge like the photo with no dripping messes underneath I'd just live with it. $900-1500 (prolly more like $2k where I live) is way too much just to have a tidy motor.

The TSB isn't an extended warranty. In the US it's covered only under the powertrain warranty too.

Common confusion about TSB's: they aren't an extended warranty or recall; just a documented specific repair for common problems.

It does help to have a TSB in hand to back up your claim when you go to the dealer. Otherwise they like to play stupid!;)

I know this is for 2nd gen v6s but my 4 cyl had leak that looked like timing cover and the dealer tried 3 times to reseal it with no luck....that's because it was the head gasket. Right where block, cover and head met on passenger side. All done under drive train warranty but was lot of time wasted going back and forth to dealer every few months. Pretty much every oil seal on the whole truck was replaced at some point on the 2005 including the steering rack being rebuilt.

Well I'm the OP on this post from 3 years ago... my timing cover is now leaking and I'm out of my 75,000 mile warranty.

I think this is just my valve cover. I was misidentifying the problem. Each side weeps just a little bit on each side. It might just look worse now due to 30F nights followed by the truck reaching operating temps during the day.

Help me decide what to do.

I'm about to replace all differential fluid, air filter, spark plugs, cabin air filter, engine oil.

Would you go ahead and squeeze in a valve cover gasket replacement if you were me?

The dealer brought this issue to my attention recently. Long story short they quoted me 3k, does anyone have suggestions/fixes, other ways to solve the problem. I get that its hard to get to for a mechanic but how can I make the job as cheap as possible if I don't have the resources to take my truck apart????

2GR-FE engines used in 3rd Gen Avalons and 3 or 4 other models are known for this as well. Transverse engine that supposedly requires removal to repair. Be glad you have a 1GR-FE.
