Just had my Tacoma serviced. They told me my timing chain cover was leaking and quoted me a 12 job at $1800! Never had a drip of oil in my driveway and no bay made a comment in the previous times I’ve had my oil changed. I told them no thanks. $1800 is obscene!

Yea, I just realized I've got that leak. Its been doing it for about 5 years now and I actually thought it was a leaking powersteering pump. I guess I can take that repair off my "to-do" list for the truck. No significant oil loss between changes.

I got lucky and got it fixed while still under warranty. It is some part of the original timing cover gasket that leaks. Don’t remember if it was the gasket or the type of sealant used in that area. They have to take a bunch of stuff off to get to it. That’s why they charge so much.

Where do you guys live and where do you get these quotes from? I got quoted $1800 at a private-party shop here in SoCal. I'd do $700 for repairs quick.

Kentucky. The quote was what Toyota wrote up on the paperwork for the warranty work. I think l still have it, if I can find it I’ll post it here.

I had the repair done on 5/29/14 at 63,243 miles. I traded the truck in with 87k miles in December 2018 with no engine leaks of any kind.

Wow, this was done under warranty still 5yr/60,000 miles? Toyota yesterday quoted $2800 vs $1800 from an Independant shop. The vehicle is actually a 2005 Tundra and doesn't have a TSB but it suffers from the same issue with the 4.0 V6.

They did it under my extended warranty that I bought from Toyota/ the dealer.
The truck was 7 years old with 63k. It doesn’t cost much to extend the warranty out to 10 years/100k if you do it when they’re new.

Was yours an aftermarket warranty or an official Toyota product warranty.

I’m 99% sure it was thru Toyota.

B5A84147-B530-47C2-A73A-491A94BD4675.jpg May have been said in thread already but mine was leaking from the same area. Covered with oil and dirt from inspection plate to and past the notorious timing cover leak area. I cleaned everything off and seen it was the inspection plate itself From what looked like the metal gasket failured. Replaced it with ultra grey gasket maker and it’s dry as a bone. 3844E31C-861D-4F6E-9903-4216401D7E51.jpgFluids do strange things when leaking from engines being is there is a constant head wind and vibration. The typically don’t move up much against the force of gravity. So if the plate is oily and underneath good chance that’s the culprit. Unless your very unlucky and it’s coming from both spots.

I got a 2020 with 26k miles and a timing cover leak. Not looking forward to having it fixed. Its not dripping on the ground but theres definitely an oil film down the whole passenger side of the engine. Miss my 98, these new trucks im note sure about.

Instead of sharing this here in the 2nd Gen forum you'd probably be better suited over in the 3rd Gen section where unfortunately there are numerous threads/reports on this issue. My old man's 2016 had a leaky timing cover as well and fortunately for him I discovered it right before his warranty expired. Regardless it sucks discovering something like that when the truck is still so relatively new and does rattle one's confidence a little bit like you mentioned.

This the same leak as on the 4.0 1GR-FE released in 2003 almost 20 years ago.

Late to the party here but I was reading out of curiosity...

An earlier post said Toyota books 8 hours for a timing cover leak????? Whaaaaaaat???

I did mine while I was doing a new rad and water pump and the whole job took way less than that!

Think the book says to pull the engine or something crazy like that, its not necessary to do the job, but the dealer goes by the book.
