How many people had a timing chain cover oil leak repaired and how did go. I bought my 2023 Tacoma 3.5 motor in may 4500 miles noticed an oil leak had torn down and repaired at the dealer. Now I hear a knock in the motor some times and fuel mileage has dropped.

A new 2023 with 4500 miles? I wouldn't be amused at all. Document everything in triplicate and take it back.

Not envisioning how a cover leak relates to those symptoms

Take it back for some more warranty exercise.

My 2016 is seeping too. Putting some permatex on next week probably. No loss in dipstick I have seen since buying the truck 4 months ago.

I have seen several posts where something has gone wrong after the repair, and to be fair several that have been fine, but I don’t trust my luck.

I bought my 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 brand new on delivery with 13 miles on it. Made it to just over 7,000 miles and then noticed the timing cover leak.

Dealership confirmed and repaired under warranty. They didn't sound very optimistic when I asked about the outlook going forward.

I'm approaching 15,000 miles with no sign of the leak returning so far. Didn't have any issues with the repair.

I once messed up and a small chunk of sealant got in a vvti port, it had a small knock after, I had to tear down and start over because of the stupid sealant. (it never got to the customer)

It sounds like they might have made the same error. Just keep on them until its better.

All 3rd gens have a potential for cover leaks, we had a 22 in this week for same problem.

I just picked mine up on Friday from having the timing cover leak fixed and now I am hypersensitive to any noise I hear. Could it possibly be that this is a normal noise? When you say the fuel mileage has dropped, how much has it dropped? If it dropped a good bit then take it back and have them look at it. If it is minor it could be multiple factors causing the drop.

You have a lot more time and a lot more warranty left for issues to pop up so I would drive it around for a few days and keep an eye on the oil level because if you take it in immediately they will probably tell you that it's normal or they can't replicate the noise.

Does the timing cover leak seem to happen at lower mileage or does it pop up at any mileage in general?

Most show up before the warranty expires at 5 year 60,000 miles.

After that its typically a stain or slow leak.

It's still a random thing but just what I have seen.

I just broke 30k on my 2022. Going to bring it to my trusted mechanic and look for all these weak points just to be sure. These rare occurrences get blown out of proportion I'm thinking. I heard about the GM 2.7 blocks that are cracked from the factory. You'd think every one was a ticking time bomb. Turns out they know of 13 out of 400,000 in service. The internet is a tricky thing.

It is, but its better to be ahead of it than catch it prior to warranty.

I strongly suggest an inspection before you lapse in warranty. Otherwise you have nothing to worry about.

I have a 7yr/100k extended warranty also but not thru Toyota. I'll be sure to triple check everything prior to 60k factory drive train expires.

All engines leak lol, 4 cylinders just have a lower sampling rate.

I have seen every model Toyota makes leak. V6's are just more likely and way more abundant.

OK then, every single engine of any kind is going to leak sooner or later. I'm just saying the 2.7's don't have the infamous timing cover leak like the V6's. I've yet to see anyone on TW complaining about a 'common' leak on a 2.7....

Just had mine done at 30k, under warranty. Hope this is the end of it!

I have a 2016 SR5 and noticed the leak in 2020. Took it back to the dealer and it was covered by the warranty. It took about a week to repair because they had to pull the motor to fix it. Apparently the motor is built with no timing chain cover gasket, just a sealant like permatex. That would have been fine if it had been given a little time to set but the cover is slapped on right away and the motor continues down the assembly line. It's been fine since then. They all noticed a defect in the lower control arms which was also covered by the warranty so they changed those too.
