I was about to buy a 2022 Tacoma sr5 4x4 with 25k miles then got underneath and noticed the engine oil coming off the bottom of the power steering pump. If it has 4 months of original warranty plus the gold certified 12 month 12,000 mile and 7 yr 100,000 powertrain warranty would you still buy it? It's a Trail Edition and I love it.

Try using it as leverage to get a better price. If the dealership has good technicians they will be able to fix the leak and most likely never have another issue with it. The timing cover leak is hit or miss. You may find another one that is not leaking now and develop the leak down the road, with this one at least you know it has been corrected.

Mine was in the shop around 30,000 miles for the leak and they did not get it fixed correctly and is back in the shop to do it all over. Covered under warranty but still sucks.

Yeah maybe I'll try to get a better price. I can't believe this is still an issue on the 7th year of the 3rd gen

And would it ever even cause an issue if I was someone that never got underneath to inspect and never noticed it....this sucks

It’s a bad design. They would have had to redesign quite a bit to design that flaw out of the equation. It is a dumb problem for sure and the fact that dealers still get to happily collect 6-8k from owners to fix it is pretty unfortunate for owners.

They're not gonna pull their pants down over an issue the next guy is unlikely to notice.
I'd pass on it. These things aren't rare.

Did you also inspect the coolant crossover pipe from underneath for pink corrosion behind the motor?

upload_2025-2-3_15-57-29.jpgupload_2025-2-3_15-57-29.jpgIt’s not all over the place yet but there was one droplet hanging there with some black grime collecting on the tip like it had been there awhile before I swiped it.

hard to tell in the pic but it was shiny and wet with a droplet hanging off with some black grime build up on the engine above it. Other than from this angle the engine is spotless

^^ Is this what you were going off when you determined the truck to have a timing cover leak???
If so, delete thread and go buy truck...

I like that answer....Yep I'm new to this truck. Engine oil leaking onto the power steering pump. Not the main symptom like other people posting about this?

One single solitary isolated petroleum based droplet, on an otherwise immaculate engine?

Myself, personally, I would have to say that's jumping the gun on the diagnosis.

no there is oil on one side and part of the underside of the pump, oil grime on engine above, assuming it's the beginning of this problem

Right, everything looks good until you get underneath and see the oil on the pump, on the engine right near it, and it was about to drip. So there's an oil leak. Is there another common cause of an oil leak onto the power steering pump?
