Does the timing chain need to be in a specific position (like the notches lined up with markers or hopefully determined by the position of pistons, such as TDC) when putting in one or both Camshaft Position Sensors?

Timing is only needed for things like pulley/chain replacement. Cam removals....

If the sensor is attached to the engine outside of any tensioned stuff, unbolt and remove, install reverse of removal. The sensor is a hall type which means it triggers based off another part like a groove or point cut/molded into the part.

I am getting "P0022: Camshaft Position A Timing Over-Retarded Bank 2" after just replacing one of my camshaft position sensors. That is why I am asking.

You might have another issue like chain too lose or a slipped gear.....slipped timing should damage the valves, but I have seen some interesting things in my time.

You might want to check your timing just for piece of mind. Even a new sensor can be bad......

Maybe..... since people change vehicles rather frequently, we would never really know....
Things built by man fail in strange ways I have found. Once had a vw that kept running after the timing belt broke, had a jet ski blow out the bottom of the case, ran on both cylinders and made 180psi of comp on both cylinders.....was LOUD but ran......strange things happen.
