why do you need to do it? they usually last as long as the motor does.

    this.

as I understand it, you don't need to worry about the chain. Belt - different story.

I've never seen a timing chain that needed replacement even when I rebuilt the engine. If the chain is worn out the rest of the engine must not be far behind.

When chains of yore stretched the sounds from the front of the motor changed. L6 Chevys, AMCs, Datsuns and V8 Pontiacs and a V6 Mustang I've had all come to mind. But the newest of those was an '86.

And the rest of the engine in all those was just fine. Chains were considered a wear item, but since the motors were non interferance, and running issues occured before complete breakdown, it was not considered a PM/service item.

I can't recall of hearing of an issue with a more modern chain set up. I'm sure there is a deflection spec on it. I'd try to find that and determine status before digging in.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I wouldn't worry about it, more hassle than it's worth. Timing chains last the life of the engine, at least they're supposed to. If not you got bigger problems to worry about.

horrible noise is probably more likely to be coming from the water pump or power steering pump or belts
