Ok guys/gals I am new to Tacoma World however wanted to see if any other 3rd Gen. Tacoma owners have had an issue similar to mine. I have only had the truck for a week now (bought used with 28,000 miles) and decided to pull the vehicle on a lift to check it out. While under the truck I noticed a wet spot near the power steering pump and took it to my local dealer to be inspected. Just got news today that the timing cover is leaking oil and needs to be repaired. I also have just been told that the engine and transmission need to be removed in order to seal the cover because the technician cannot seal it in its current state. Has anyone else had or heard of this issue yet?

I understand it's covered just seems odd for a repair of this caliber to happen on a newer model vehicle, especially with the miles it has.

Remove the engine and transmission to repair the timing cover?

As dear old dad used to say........... "I wish I could have the engineer who designed this here so he could learn how difficult it is to make a simple repair when they don't think ahead."

Of course, their explanation would be 'It didn't matter because it should not leak while in warranty. Only after. Sorry.'.

In these situations, I always say "I wish the engineer were here so I could beat him with my break-over bar".

Dad might have mumbled a few other things as well.

But I try to do my part to keep this a family friendly forum. :D

Thanks for the replies, after coming from multiple issues with my previous FR-S it just sucks to start out with this on the truck.

Yeah, I had this issue. 3 days to repair. They had to remove the front cover on the engine.

I gave up being upset or annoyed with this truck. I just expect shit to break or have workmanship problems.

My latest was tearing parts of the dash out to put felt tape everywhere.

I'll just drive until I reach the limits of the warranty, then sell it.

I really wish I had joined the forum prior to purchase. I love the truck but do have some concerns moving forward. Maybe I'll get lucky and this will be the only major issue I have anytime soon.

only way to prove that the 3rd GEN howling rear actually is a factory defect is to have a 3rd party with expertise in how differentials operate to disassemble it and come up with a conclusion on its operation, Toyota Corp. has already reviewed the rear and called its operation normal

Yea that's bullshit and they know it.

Nothing is normal about the howl. And if it's normal for the truck to howl then I'm going to continue to talk shit about the truck until it's fixed.

I had a similar issue on the FR-S. I had an awful cricket chirping noise later diagnosed as a fuel pump. Three fuel pumps later and noise was never corrected. Just deemed normal operation.
