So I was wondering might sound like a dumb question so I just got my head redone and my Toyota threw a chain I was wondering does the 1st piston have to be all the way up when you put the head on and how can you tell if your on the right stroke on your block since the head is off the motor I’m working on a 1990 Toyota pickup 22re Thanks

I would install the head with the pistons in the middle of their stroke or 1/4 turn back from tdc.

Drop the head on and such, set the head to the proper timing mark then bring the crank around.

Unless you have the distributor in already the block doesn't care which stroke it's on. Just tdc will be tdc for cylinders 1/4 each time. The head is really what you have to watch for but with the valve cover off you can tell cylinder 1 tdc by the rocker arms being loose
