I'm Malcolm, a new member of TW. I recently purchased a 2002 Tacoma v6 4wd 4dr TRD SR5. I'm in the middle of replacing the radiator, fan clutch, tensioner pulley, water pump, timing belt, harmonic balancer and crank shaft seal. I have everything off except the timing belt and water pump. I need advice on how to set the timing with the two (L & R) camshaft pulleys and the crank pulley. Any advice, links, pics, and such are much appreciated. I'm planning to let my son drive it when he has license.

    Thanks,

    Malcolm

    Hey Malcolm,

Welcome. You shouldn't have to reset if you don't move anything once you pull the belt and you start at tdc. Let me know if you need links for timing belt replacement resources. I'm doing it this weekend.

There are hash marks on each cam gear, they will line up with marks stamped into the the steel cover plate behind the gears, the woodruff key on crank will be straight up inline with mark on oil pump housing ( make sure key doesn't fall out and is sitting level when sliding balancer back on)

a good quality timing belt will also be marked for each gear and crank with white lines

turn engine (crank shaft) over by hand 2 times after install, make sure marks on all gears line up with marks on plate and oil pump. marks on belt will be off a tooth or 2. ( this is intentional to keep wear on belt and gears even and not develop a wear pattern)

Thanks for the tips and video. I installed the new crank seal, water pump, thermostat, and pulley/roller right above the water pump. I lined up the TDC marks and disconnected the battery. I'm planning to replace the timing belt tensioner and everything else tomorrow. My boys really like Toyota's. We're ready to take a road trip fishing in it, and cruise the pipe line to check on the long lost deer stand.

Any tips on posting, sending pictures on TW?

    Thanks,
    Malcolm
