Well, you can debate it, sure..... I see it like this (my own opinion), there are those people with a personality or character which you just can't please (it's not in their nature to be satisfied, or just always have to complain about something), and there are those who do what slowmod01 has already mentioned.... It's unfortunate you'll have to deal with those customers, like anything it's all part and partial and you'll get some rotten apples time to time or maybe have a bad run of them sometimes.

Guy, you're describing most businesses. Most cost serious money to open, maintain, stock, staff, operate, and so on. However, most of those are also able to pay reasonable wages, without their employees demanding tips from the customers. Don't know what else to say that hasn't already been said, so I'm going to end my participation in this discussion with that.

I didn't make the rules of what is customary in American restaurants, neither did anyone on this site. Tipping is customary in the service industry in america, sorry but thats how it is.

I guess we could pay the wait staff 20$ an hour and factor in the added overhead to menu prices...... Then instead of paying this "hidden fee" known as a tip, it will just become part of the price of the menu item. Problem solved.

And why does everyone keep bringing up the issue of bad service, that wasnt the topic ! This is assuming service was up to par, cut and drt.

After reading the (so far) 5 pages of posts, I am guessing that a great majority of you have eaten spit/saliva, and had not even known it.

Obviously that is a gross overstatement by someoen who read my preious statement and decided they know the restaurant business. MOST business are not restaurants. If you want to believe its the same go ahead but that doesn't make it true. The restaurants you see around you closing down are generaly operated by people who had the same foolish beliefs.

This is how I feel too. I've never not left a tip. I typically tip 20 percent for good service, 15 if I was at all unhappy. It's not fair to punish the server for poor management or an understaffed kitchen.

As far as the higher priced places, I don't get to go there very often myself, but when I do I will still tip 15-20 percent. I figure the average customer in those places is more demanding, and probably the owner and manager are more demanding. A service job is pretty much shoveling crap. If you work in a "high end" joint, you are shoveling more crap than someone working at a Denny's or something similar. You should get paid more for dealing with the higher "standard" expected of you.

And there is no way in hell I'd ever try to get someone fired over the service they provided. That's complete bullshit. If the manager of the place can't observe his own employees and act accordingly, that's his problem. There's way too many bosses out there who kiss every customer's ass and throw their employees under the bus just because a customer says so. I've experienced it myself, and it's not pleasant. And believe me, the customer who brought that on me will get it all back someday. Karma is a bitch.
