Have any of you done the trail to the Tip Top mining ghost town just north of Phoenix? My buddy and I are planning to make the trek on Sunday.

I was out there in '07, really nice area that should be real green right now with maybe some water in the washes. Trails aren't hard but you have to cross the Agua Fria River which might be semi-high. Some neat ruins to explore... be safe around the mines.

Here are a few of the pics from that trip.

Just make sure the area is still open. I did a research project last semester on AZ mining and lots of mines across the state have been closed over the past few years. Many are privately owned or have access restricted with the need to contact the land owners prior to entry. I'm not familiar with that specific mine though. Have fun!

That sounds like a kick ass trail run. Let us know how it goes.

What should I watch out for around the mines?

We went out there today and missed a turn. We ended up at the Indian fort instead. We happened to run into an off duty tour guide and he told us all about the fort and cut up some cactus for us to eat. The view was amazing. I was really surprised what I could do with a stock Sport with 2" lift and worn stock highway tires.

We're gonna do it again next weekend and hopefully make it to Tip Top then.

Sounds fun, how high was the river crossing?

We went through both river crossings. The deeper one was just a bit over 2 feet.

Some buddies and I are going there again this weekend. This time we'll make it to Tip Top for sure. (We now know which turn we missed and one of the guys has an off road GPS). So far we have 3 trucks in the group. It's right off exit 236 on highway 17, just north of Phoenix. Would anyone else like to go?
