That's strange because the physical key inside my FOB works for the tailgate on my '17. Toyota must have caught enough hell from the first owners of the 3rd gen to fix that the next model year.

I called the dealership. The bottom line is (from what they told me): if you lose your key you will have to replace the barrel (~$250.00 cdn dollars (parts no labour) was the informal quote). When this is done, you will be able to not only have one key but a second one if you order it and obviously pay for it.

So I said "to confirm what you are saying", if I want a second key I need to change the barrel. Answer: "yes".

I now have my key on a high-viz paracord with a small carabiner and it will remain in the cab as an SOP. How long before one of my daughters or my wife lose the thing? I hope that one day, the fob gets to unlock the tailgate.

Again, let me know if I am missing something here... This does not look to me as a "soldier proof" solution.

Just pull the lock cylinder out of the tailgate and bring it to a locksmith to be rekeyed to work with your ignition key.

You have an sr5 that doesn't have push to start .You don't have the same fob. On 16s the tailgate has a different key than the one hidden inside the pts fob. Toyota fixed this for the 17s

    Not that easy it seems...

Just stopped by Canadian Tire. As soon as I took out my key the guy said "Can't reproduce those. We can do smart keys but not those ones. You're not the first one to ask... Toyota right?".

So, just to be clear. I have an '18 (Off Road) with push button start. It comes with two FOB (electronic access) and one single separate physical key for the bed. That second key is also somewhat "special" as it cannot be reproduced locally. Looks like it will remain inside the cab on that high viz paracord and carabiner for a while...

They're laser cut keys. Go to a locksmith.

Thanks for this. Just called two different locksmith. Answer(s): "Don't have anything for 2018 Toyota".

    The search continues...

Interested in the type of keys your '18 has.. fob key and tailgate key. (I am a locksmith) there are a few variations depending on the trim level. If you could post an image of a similar key from google, or message me with a pic of your actual tailgate key, hopefully I can help you with it.

My 18 Off Road with the Technology Package came with a hidden FOB key and a "normal" key that also opens the tailgate and the driver's side door.

Yep, which is why I was responding to a question about the '18: "Interested in the type of keys your '18 has.. fob key and tailgate key." ;)
