Tips for installing sound deadening mats?

I'm changing out my speakers and decided to purchase some noico sound deadening mats.

Before I jump in to the doors do you guys have any recommendations, tips, best practices to do it in the best, easiest, and most effective way?

Was planning to get as much in inside the door against the outer part of door and any other good spots

I also want to put it in the back of the cab behind the back seats in my dcsb.

 

Clean surface with alcohol and cloth of some sort, remove vapor barrier slowly don’t rush it you might end up ripping it like what I did was only minor and small though on my passenger rear. Be careful prying the rear storage bins, I broke 1 clip per side already haha, but I don’t need them. A roller is a must have tool, use trim tools to get creases in tight places. Have some touch up paint in case you end up scratching some edges when your cutting the matting on the door with your blade. Tessa tape is good so you can wrap excess speaker wire so you don’t have it rattling against the door. I did about maybe 60% on the outer portion of all 4 of my doors. Took about 2 hours per door with speaker install. It’s very tedious so have some music playing and take breaks when you need to. You can also use foam rings but I didn’t do that. My back wall I only did the bottom half since that’s where my sub box is.

What speakers are you going with? I have the kicker ds series and planning on changing it again to infinity’s coaxial.

 

Surface prep is key, I used acetone to cut through the wax like material they spray in the doors. Went with Kno knoise kolossus, 100mil thick, for the most mass pe sq ft. It takes much less to do the job, since it's heavier. 39 sqft was enough for the entire truck, even overhead. Second skin butyl rubber rope works GREAT in the doors to tame the rattles from the added structure support (see picture). Take your time and only apply sound deadening where needed. Tap the panel first and feel. You are looking to deaden anything that rattles or makes a higher frequency sound. Have fun and wear cutting resistance gloves.

I agree with Fattypack, Tessa tape is a must around lose wires!

I went a bit overboard and installed 100sqft (entire truck) of MLV (1lb / sqft) and glued closed cell foam on the back side. Makes a huge difference but lots of work.

 

Get some extra clips so it isnt as big of a deal if/ when you break a couple getting the panels off. I broke one on a door panel and a couple from the rear wall. Check out my sound system thread:

You don’t need to 100% coverage. I remember 70% coverage as the vendor recommendation. The biggest difference came from the sound deadener under the headliner. Originally when it rained, being in the truck was like sitting in a drum.

I have already installed the speakers in the front door and dash. back door speakers arrive next week. I am going for focals all around and will install an amp later on. Undecided if I want a woofer as I don't tend to listen to music that relies that much on the low end. I wanted improvments to my my mid and high range and ready it is a million times better with the front door and dash.

The sound deadening is also to help with speaker performance but really also to reduce road noise.

 

Hey where would I find one of those rollers for smooth out the mats after sticking?

Are they sold as in the hardware store or car accessory store? Trying to find one locally and not sure where to look. As searching for rollers keeps getting me paint roller results.

 

I used a small 1" wall paper roller from Lowe's.

Did the front doors today. Two squares of the material perfectly does each front door. Will do the back doors later in the week once I get my rear speakers.

So far so good. Used acetone and alcohol to prep the surfaces and got a wallpaper seam roller from Lowe's.

 

How long did it take you roughly per door? What’s a good speaker to upgrade from factory and do you have to cut factory plug and splice new speaker or will it plug attach to aftermarket? I haven’t opened doorbto look so I’m not sure exactly what’s there yet.

 

I took my time but I was familiar with removing my front door panels as I did it when I installed my speakers. I'd say it took me maybe an hour each? That was before I gathered all the materials and tools first and cleaned up as I went.

I got focal IS690TOY kit for my dash and front doors and the IC165TOY for the back doors. They are all plug and play so require no splicing. Very easy and sound great

 

I was planning on ordering the kicker cs series with some sound deadening material..what is it that is making you want to get the infinitys if you don't mind me asking..i know infinity is a good brand btw.

 

I knew one of my kickers going out and just last week I blew my driver side front speakers haha. I now have the stock in that area but will be upgrading to infinity’s when I feel the need to. I want the infinitys because their highs seem to be brighter than the kickers. I want my system to scream and I heard the infinitys are good for it. Unless I chamge my mind and pod my doors.
