I had an overhead crane last time I took one out of a taco. Maybe splitting it is a good idea. Put a jackstand under the trans to hold it

I’d love a 4BT diesel Taco. But it weighs too much

Never done a taco, but I have done some heart surgery on a Subaru Outback. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES as you go. Really helps for figuring out all the annoying bits when putting the whole thing back together.

I have a one and a half car garage. Usually doing the engine pulls and swaps by myself, the engine alone is easier when it comes to maneuvering.

Unbolt the driveshaft, and let it down. Slide the trans back. Pull the engine.

Ziplock bags for the different bolts.

Swivel head rachets and ratchet wrenches.

17mm wiggle socket and a transmission extension for a half inch impact work great

    Boxer engines: Not even once.

(I love Boxer engines but maintenance is slowly eating me alive)

I got a 2 ton hoist that has the adjustable boom. It says in the longest postition it can still lift 1 ton. The engine doesn’t weigh 1000 pounds.

I've never pulled the engine out of a Taco, but I've pulled and installed plenty of motors out of various cars and trucks. Here's the way I've always done it. Put a 2X4 crossways on a floor jack. Put the floor jack under the transmission with the 2X4 across the front of the pan. If you have a helper, put the jack handle pointing towards the rear axle. If you're doing it by yourself, put the jack handle pointing forward. Raise the jack at the same time your lifting the motor. When the motor is clear of the motor mounts, slide the motor forward and lift it out. If you're going to have the motor out for awhile, cut a 2X4 to length that will sit on top of the frame rails in front of the transmission. Put a couple of long bolts or engine valves into the belhousing bolt holes from the front and lower the trans till they sit on the 2X4. When you're putting the motor back in, jack the trans up till it hits the floor. Get the motor in place and up against the transmission. Install and tighten a couple of bellhousing bolts. Then take the jack out. Then lower the motor into place. The only time I have pulled the motor and trans together was when I was scrapping the car. I imagine pulling the motor, trans, and transfer case would be a real challenge.

So far so good. Snapped the lower rear bolt on the AC compressor and fought getting that out without cracking a line. Moving on to the exhaust and starter in the morning. Happy my starter has never gone out! What a job just to get to that thing. Going to enjoy getting rid of that east coast cancer! Thanks for the tips......

What are you gonna do with the old block? I wouldn’t mind taking it off your hands
