Friends, looking for some advice on my tires. Some quick background. Two weeks ago I purchased my 2015 TT AC, 4WD V6. The truck has 265/75/16 tires on it. Although the more standard OEM tire is 265/70/16 I did some research and these tires can be used on the truck. The tires are pictured here and are Destination M/T2 off road tires. Here is my challenge. I was excited about these big knobby tires because I live in NE Ohio where we get a ton of snow. However, we've had a bit of rain lately and the ground has been mildly wet. I've noticed when I make some turns (and mind you not wild ones), the back end has fishtailed a bit. This concerns me because now I am thinking these might NOT be great in the snow. Are any of you familiar with this tire or off road tires enough to know if these are going to be bad in the snow? Should I swap these out for All Season tires?

    Thank you in advance,

    Frank

You would be interested in anything with the snowflake symbol... which is going to be a tire with siping on the tread blocks. If you want an aggressive tire that has the winter rating look no farther than the Duratracs. There are some haters on them, and they do have a flimsy sidewall compared to others (a benefit for me as I don’t wheel anywhere rocky and the thinner sidewalls ride nicer and are lighter) Others have complained about the wet performance of them... but I haven’t had that experience. Ran my first set for 100k and sold them when they came off! Foolishly replaced them with BFG all terrain K03’s and hated them... pulled them off at 60k and put another set of Dura’s on. Best all around tire I’ve run, great grip @ 33psi

3" lift on 33 inch Nitto's with 18" Fuel wheels. N-Fab step bars. Husky floor liners.
That is not a 2015 factory wheel. It doesn't matter and more than likely the previous owner kept his wheels and tires and stuck those on there to trade it in. I'm sure you will upgrade them anyway after you pay off them tires. Its what we do... :)

Another option is dedicated winter tires with studs for the winter and save those for summer .

If you are allowed to use studs in Ohio , I beleive it gives you another 3 years of use out of a winter tire than simply running without studs

    Stock for now.. maybe
I know in AK they recommend tires that have the 'mountain peak' symbol on them which is rated for cold weather as well as snowy conditions. Not sure how well they work during the summer but I can't image them being bad. Certain all season tires aren't rated for colder temperatures and the rubber will actual harden up. Comparable to leaving a cheap extention cord outside during cold weather.

Just a bit more info for you hope it helps. I am a believer in having good and proper tires for the type of driving you might encounter. Might help you out of a jam at some point

Hah! Indeed 100k miles... and sold them! I can’t remember, I think I got $100 out of them and they weren’t completely gone. Probably helps that I ran them almost 100% highway and maybe 6 trips off road total. The BFG’s were still good on tread at 60k (sold for $200) Hated the BFG’s (not fully their fault- E rated) and now I’m 6k into another set of Duras.

I guess I will respectfully disagree. On the second set of duratracs now. They like to be rotated that’s a big one for maximum life but the rubber is fairly soft and they do wear a bit faster then other tires I’ve owned. 45k give or take is what your going to get from these and that’s not terrible considering the large tread blocks. The performance on snow and ice degrades some when the hit about 50% then significantly at 75%. Overall they have performed well and I haven’t been disappointed on anything I’ve used them for but will most likely go with something else next time just because new tires are fun. And while I understand people are going to have different experiences I personally don’t believe anyone is going to get 100k out of them but they are still a pretty good at.

Disagree all you want about the performance of Duras but one thing you can’t dispute is that I got 100k out of mine... I wouldn’t make it up.

Truck was bought new Jan of 15, ran the Rugged Trails to 30k miles- first set of Duras went on and ran till 134k, BFG’s to 194k and second set of Duras have 6k (I’m at 200k-ish) It is what it is I guess, rotate every 7500 miles, keep them inflated somewhat... I don’t do anything special.

That is a mud tire. They don't usually perform well on wet pavement or icy conditions. They do pretty well in deep soft snow, but once it ices over they are not the best option.

I've only had one set of Michelins that came on a used truck that I bought some time ago and they are a great road tire in wet or snowy conditions. They are not the best off road tire and I generally need something a little better in mud. For a lot of people I'd highly recommend them.

I put a set of these on my F150 about a year ago and have been highly impressed. I'd buy them again and will put them on my Tacoma next time it is due for tires. Best rain tire I've ever owned and they did great in mud the past year. We didn't get snow last winter so I can't say, but they are 3 peak rated.

I have Falken Wildpeaks AT3W on my 13 TRD OR DC and live in Northeast VT 15 miles from Canadian border. Love the tires and yes they have the 3 peak mountain symbol for severe snow. I tow a lot in Winter to snowmobile in Northern NH & Maine with no problems. Before I retired, I drove a lot more and would run dedicated Winter Tires for commuting. The Falkens have been great all year round.
