Tire advice- To swap newer big tires w/ smaller older tires?

    I know, I know, more tire questions. Figured I'd ask in the NW section before subjecting myself to the full 2nd gen board.

    So my recently purchased truck came with 285/75/16 Open country R/Ts. They ride nice and are a little loud, but not too bad. They are also fairly new. No receipt so I don't know exact mileage, but I'd guess they're at about 80-85%. They are also big, and rub in a lot of places which is very annoying. I'm not so set on that tire size to feel like I want to do the necessary hacking to eliminate the rubbing.

    My old tacoma that is for sale has some KO2s on it that are 265/75/16 with about 50% life left in them.

    I'm thinking about straight up swapping tires. It would require a remount/balance/all that. But that smaller size would probably be a lot less rubbing. Thinking I'll be out close to $175-200 if I go this route. Get a couple more years on the KO2s and put the savings towards other truck upgrades in the mean time.

    Or buy new tires, and sell the open countries. The used tire market doesn't seem like it's all that lucrative though. So I'm not sure I'd recoup much of my new tire purchase. And it's one more thing to try to sell. Guessing I'll get maybe $400 to 500 if I'm lucky on used tires. And planning on about 1000ish for new tires, so that'd leave me out about 600.

    I'm leaning towards doing the swap out.
    What do you all think?

    Me personally, I'd swap em.

    Before taking my advice to heart, keep in mind that I'm the weird-ass on this forum that openly admits to not doing anything worse than the occasional dirt or gravel doubletrack. Maybe sand, once. I'm a mall crawler and I equip my truck for function over style. (At least the mechanical bits. The interior cosmetics are a different issue. :anonymous:)

    So for me 285s are less than useless.

    You may not need to do a tire to rim swap.

    Are you sure the wheels won't just mate from your old truck to your new truck???


    Sorry, I'm not familiar with all the models and wheel configs. But I'm reasonably sure the 16s are all the same for fitment.

    My use is mostly going to be camping in the summer, primarily on forest service roads. And usually once a winter i get up to the Gifford Pinchot to rip around in the snow. I'm not trying to wheel really.
    I had an 02 Land rover for a bit with M/Ts, air lockers, winch, and all the stuff. And I sill only went wheeling a couple times a year. It's fun, but very low on my priorities.

    I could swap wheels straight across, but I want to keep these very fancy looking SCS wheels.

    I guess you need to visit the tire store for a rubber swap.

    You should verify the 265 tires will mate on the SCS rims. Tires have a working rim width. IIRC, 265s tires will be happy on 7-8" rims, not 100% sure. The tire store should be able to verify.

    I appreciate that consideration! The SCS are 8". Seems like that will be ok.

    I bet you could find someone locally to swap you tires, meet at discount tire or the like and split the tire swap cost. You might even find someone willing to cover the tire swap cost for the opportunity to move to 33s.
