I have a 2017 Silver Tacoma TRD Sport with manual transmission if that matters.... looking at upgrading the wheels and tires and really like the TRD Pro wheels in black or gray but I also saw some Fuel Trophys with matte black and gray bead... no chrome on those wheels and I like them a lot. I like the BFG A/T KO2, Faulken Wildpeaks, Toyo Open Country AT, and Hankook Dynapros ATM .... without lift I would be running either the factory 265/65 r 17 or may jump up to the 265/70 R 17... I like my gas mileage and I really enjoy the ride of my truck but want a beefier looking tire for my hunting and fishing trips (nothing crazy) My question really comes down to the backspacing of the wheels. As it sits now the factory wheels look just inside my fender flares so I wouldn't mind a half inch or so more tire....I dont want them sticking out past the fender flares because I dont want to encourage paint chips from rocks but I also dont want a underbite either :) will the trd pro wheels or the fuel trophy wheels accomplish what I am after? Do yall recommend them? Can you give me all of that for free :)

Check out the thread, 17 TRD Pro rims and BFG AT TKO2's... That will give a good view of those rims, with different size tires.
Just looked at the Fuel Trophy's the + 6 offset should keep you inside flare, -6 may put them just a bit out side flare. Your factory rims are +30 offset. +6 offset would be around 1" further out than your factory rims Hope that helps.

That helps a million. So the +6 fuel or the trd wheel would be an inch further out than my factory wheels now? If so it would be very near the edge of the fender flare ... That is exactly what I am looking for....

the only two things that matter in your scenario:

    1) Wheel width
    2) wheel offset (backspacing)

an 8" wide wheel sits perfectly flush with the fender of a 3rd gen Tacoma at a 0mm offset (ET 0). Stock has a higher more positive offset as to not interfere with suspension travel and tires hitting fenders.

Going BELOW that et0 into negative numbers will begin to protrude past the fenders.

This becomes a personal preference with your tire sizes, as a 265/75 is not a huge tire. Some people like "tuck", others "flush" and others "poke".

Your call. Again, all that matters in this equation is #'s 1 and 2 above, # 3 would be tire size, but is negligible in your scenario.

Yes, if you are looking at 17x8.5 Fuel. Remember your tire sidewall will be out further.

yarberrymt, hint the nail on the head, with his explanation.

I don’t want it too far out.... but close to or just at the edge of the fender flare would be perfect for me.... y’all are much smarter than me so I am still confused if I will get that with the fuel or the trd Pro wheels

I'll add that the tricky part is that wheel width (primary figure) interferes with fitment calculations by altering where certain offsets (secondary figure) sit at the fender. So, in a 17x8.5 wheel, you have 1/2" (~12.7mm) more width, which technically equates to subtracting 1/2" from your offset used in the example above (8" wheel, 0 offset).

Calculations are great and necessary before dropping coin on new shoes, but there is no better way than to do a test fit, by mounting the wheel (sans tire is OK) to your hub and look with your eyes to see where it lies within your fender well. You can definitely eyeball if it's "poking" and get a good grasp on whether or not it's flush.

Be careful with asking people who sell wheels (local tire shop or whatever) the "will it fit" question. Often, they do not take into account all of the details we're talking about.

The good news is that, unlike sports cars, our trucks have tons of fenderwell clearance and this whole topic isn't really a big concerns because trucks can accommodate such a wide range of wheel sizes.

Ok, like yarberrymt mentioned. at 0 offset 8" wide wheel will be flush. Now if you go +6 offset it will move in 1/4"+ in. Now add 1/2" because Fuel is 8.5. so that would end up 1/4" out side your flare, at the most. If you go with 265/70/17 tread will be in wheel well, but sidewall may bulge out a bit. It going to be damn close to flush.

Did I get that right Yarberrymt?

With a slightly bigger tire and wheel would I also need a alignment?

Always good to get an alignment with new tires, with the money your sending on them. Not requirement, won't change your alignment with new wheels and tires. But I would.

Your stock rim is 17x7.5 +30mm offset 5" backspace.

Here's a calculator to help you look at different wheels. Scroll down to fender clearance to see how much poke new wheels get.

Tire poke and wheel poke will differ more, when you mount the same width tire on a wheel that is wider than stock or don't use the measuring rim width for a particular size tire. The rim on a 17x8.5 +6mm will poke 1-1/2" further than stock. A 265 tire on a 17x8.5 +6mm will poke 1". If you mounted a 285(closer to a 8.5" measuring rim width than a 265) it would be closer to close to 1-1/2" of tire poke.

You need rims with 5" or less of backspace. The calculator is off by 1/2" when it calculates backspace. It's calculating backspace using rim width(inside-to-inside) and not wheel width(outside-to-outside). Just add 1/2" to whatever it calculates.

So, he should be flush. I just took a 4' level plumb, from flare. My stock sport wheel lip was 1.5" in from plumb line of flare. That was Front and back.

    16x8
    4.5” backspacing

Did the math myself to minimize the tire rub in any situation including performing a flex test and full compression at full turn and after cab mount chop, no rubbing at all.

    I’m running 33s though (285/75R16 Toyo Open Country AT2) w/ 2” suspension lift

That’s my numbers also with the -6 fuel trophy wheels and 265 70 r17 tires.... am I correct- I am pretty confused with all this discount tire quoted me 2,038 for BFG At K02 and the fuels plus install—- decent?

I can understand the confusion... You want +6 Fuel That will give you the 1.5" poke over stock wheel, like splitbolt mentioned. -6 would give you more poke.

+6 sticks out just a little further than my current setup and would be nearly flush with where my fender flare is? If That’s the case then I think that’s the direction I would head. Sounds like no problems running 265 70 r17’s with stock suspension either.

    I saw wheels 4 at $232 = $928 BFG's $225 = $900 total $1828 $ 410 install is a lot, unless alignment is included
