I chose my Tacoma for its utility first, but it's hard not to want to mod the hell out of this thing.

I ride / fix / break motorcycles and need the bed to be functional, but I want to add a rear bumper and tire carrier. Are there any existing solutions, or people out there running a setup that works with the tailgate down / open?

I was thinking an offset wheel and a riser for the pivot point on the gate. You could open the tailgate and close the tire carrier over top of it. The offset wheel would allow space for the rear wheel of the bike to fit.

    Thoughts?

Might be worth just leaving the spare at home. Many cars don't even come with them now.
Get load E tires, a plug kit (and mini DC air compressor), a membership to AAA and leave the spare at home until you are gonna hit the trail. E load tires will reduce your chance of getting a flat, the plug kit will fit simple punctures, and AAA will bail you out when all else fails.

Sorry, that's the best solution I have.

Ok picture this. A dual swing out carrier that triangulates / latches over the tailgate when down. This would give me the space I need for a tire, keep carrier doors from hanging out in the street and be a solid solution!

Get a roof rack and put the tire on the roof. Then get a bumper without a tire carrier.

Not a bad thought. I was wanting the keep the weight as lost as possible, but that's Definately the easiest solution thus far.

Any recommendations on roof baskets that fit OE holes?

I just got the bajarack. Fits the oem roof rack mounting holes. Took practically no time to install and looks good too.

What is the bike? As a motorcyclist it gives me the willies to hang a motorcycle off my trailer hitch.

A trailer is an option for hauling bikes.

the baja rack looks perfect but I didn't see an Access cab option. I'll have to reach out.

@Slainte the Pinsu and Front runners look good but are flat. I'm thinking something with a bit more of a basket

@jethro it's an 03' Sportster right now, but I'll be picking up a dirt or dual sport anytime soon. The reason I picked up my first Tacoma was to go grab craigslist finds, get them running and flip them. Those trailer hitch carriers are no Bueno. Scares the heck out of me. On a standard bed, the center of the tire falls right in between the tailgate and bed.

@PackCon, true, but the reason I chose this was so I didn't have to go with a trailer.

I still envision the bike being in the way, as posted above. The tailgate isn't really the problem, as I see it. You'll go to close the carrier and there's that pesky motorcycle in the way...

I say put the spare in the stock location - anything up to 33' fits. If that's not an option, put it on the roof or leave it at home.
