Front (2.75" total): 1.6" Eibach coils, Toytec 0.5" (L) & 0.25" (R) top plate spacers, 5100's @ 0.85", Built Right uniball UCA's, Differential drop, Removed sway bar Rear: TSB springs, Wheeler's 1.5" AAL, 5100's, 2* shims, Carrier bearing drop, F and R Spidertrax, 285/75-16 Goodyear Duratracs, Self-fabbed sliders, rear bumper, and skid plates, Cobra 75 CB, Bed lined slim lo-pro tool box, Bed Extender, Diff breather mod, Two tail gate security mods, Exhaust dumped behind axle, Can't leave shit alone so plenty more coming...
I've had s-class (low profile) chains on the front with no problems. Cables would easily fit too. The heavy duty chains would probably need to stay on the rear.

Back in the 70's, my wife and I decided to take a sightseeing drive across New Mexico's Valle Grande, now the Valles Caldera National Preserve, following a rather spectacular snow storm. I had a '69 Bronco at the time with M&S tires all around. The road had been 'plowed', but there was still about 4 inches of snow on it plus places where even more had blown across.

I had chains for all four wheels, but I didn't put them on, and I had no trouble whatsoever navigating in 4-high. What started out as a sightseeing drive turned into more of a rescue mission, however, as we stopped to pull at least twenty cars out of snowbanks along the way. There were two or three other 4X4 rigs doing the same. What was amazing, though, is that fully half the cars we helped get unstuck had chains on.

Just as four wheel drive is no panacea for driving in the snow without good sense and due caution, neither are chains always going to keep you out of the ditch. Indeed, the few times it snows here in Albuquerque each year, there is nothing more frightening that to have some tricked out 4X4 coming the opposite direction going so fast you can hear the chains singing.

    1. Yes, but we drive in sunny weather better than most! I don't care about snow & driving.

    2. Yes, you're correct. There are a lot of elites in this state that believe more laws & regulations will fix everything....how about the closing of the NUMMI plant?!?!

    1. agreed 100% - we have a lot of new residents here (lots from CA). they are easy to spot during/after a good storm. they will either be in the ditch or piled on top of each other. sort of like bumper cars on ice.

    2. i guess more laws mean more money for...wait. so theres a right way and a wrong way!? i dont plan on visiting CA anytime soon but damn if im going to be arrested for improper wiping...

IMO - the chain laws are there to scare some of the inexperienced or unprepared drivers away. if you dont know how to handle your vehicle, stay home.

Chain laws are there for one purpose.
They force the guy that thinks he is a good snow driver to install proper equipment for the conditions which gives the other drivers a better chance of not getting killed cause Mr I'm a Good Snow Driver just spun out and took a bunch of innocent people out with him.

Hey!! im Mr good snow driver...

I think chains will give people the feeling that "hey im mr chains guy, i have traction and i can drive as fast as i want until the first curve in the road." then they turn their wheels and just go straight and take out all the innocents who are driving careful and doing fine without chains

    True!

Don't forget too, you go off a "mountain" in the Catskills or Adirondacks, you drop three or four feet. You go off in CA, you may keep going for thousands. From what I've seen, the mtn's of CA are much steeper (and the roads less maintained in the snow) than back east. FWIW, my GF, from Wisconsin, thinks the same as you though.

But I think a lot of it is Californian's (myself included) can't drive in the snow. We have enough trouble in rain... probably cuz it only comes twice a year and there's months worth of grime on the roads.

lol. Ny spends registration/tax dollars to put guard rails up instead of making people buy chains to be "safer". California is too busy supporting heathcare and other crap for illegals.

There are some steep ass mountains in NY. Granted you will only fall 100-200ft to your death but in Cali you can fall for a thousand to your death... your still not gonna live through it...

I think NYers know that snow is coming arent dumb about it. We prepare. Out here i see tons of people with bald ass tires. Most people in cali run summer tires not all seasons. So... make everybody run chains in case the hand full of idiots decide to try and make it up the mountain in the snow or worse come back down the mountain with no snow experience and without being prepared

Here in Oregon you need to either carry chains or have traction tires to go over the passes in the winter. What I don't quite understand is if some states require chains only, why are cars being built that can't use chains? On my Dad's new 2010 Subaru, if he were to put on chains it would void his warranty.

Here's the deal. I live in Tahoe. With a 4x4 taco the chain control guys will just smile and wave you through. The law states that you have to carry chains in snow country, not have them on (welcome to California), so buy the cheapest ones you can and get them from a place you can return them at the end of the season if not used. You will not use them. Ive never used mine unless I had to pull some stupid tourist out of a burm (Jeep, Escalade, hummer,or prerunner who forgets he's impotent). If you come on a busy weekend, just be careful. The tourists in 4x4's are the worse.
    Have fun and enjoy Tahoe.

Who are the "chain control guys"? Here in Oregon if the "chain or traction tires required" sign is up and flashing, the State Patrol will give you a ticket and turn your ass around if you don't have one or the other. I think they've learned from seeing all the 4WD trucks in the ditch and up-side down that some with 4WD act as though they can drive 60 miles an hour over snow and ice covered roads just because they have all 4 wheels engaged.

The "chain control guys" are california DOT employees that set up road blocks on all highways heading into the Tahoe area during times that chain controls are in place. They check every car, truck, van, etc. for proper tires, chains, 4x4, or whatever the current controls are. This is necessary because the flashing road signs are often not heeded by tourists resulting in massive road closures and loss of tourist revenue. If you have a 4x4 tacoma they just smile and wave you through. As for the 4WD's in the ditch, well, they're not locals.
    Thanks
