So I went to order new tires for my Tacoma. I decided on a little larger of a tire than the factory Goodyear Wrangler All Terrain Adventure M+S 265/70R16 with just a little larger but more aggressive tire like the Goodyear MTR LT265/75R16. The tire shop (not a national chain but a large regional chain tire company) refuses to sell me the tires because something about the the MTR is a 10 ply and would require more air in the tire and therefore the tire monitoring system would set off the the tire light indicator. Okay, they cant program those things? is he an idiot or what? I was pulling the trigger and now he has me second guessing. I've NEVER heard of such a thing. Anyone?

    He's an idiot...
The tire you're looking at actually 'needs' 37 PSI.

A lot of guys are running KO’s and other 10 ply tires and never heard a single person say anything of that. It could be possible but you’d think someone would have posted about it. Get the 10 plys if that’s what you want

10 ply is going to be overkill for 90 percent of all Tacomas. But that's not going to affect the tpms.

If it’s a higher load rating, it can withhold higher PSI. In some cases it is even suggested because the sidewall is extra stiff. So his logic isn’t totally false. However, you can run a load range E at normal/slightly above normal pressures and be fine.

I doubt the tech is really trying to not sell you something. He just isn’t as knowledgeable as Tacomaworld. He may think he’s doing you a favor by not setting off your TPMS by overfilling your new meaty tires.

They think you're going to have the full 80psi that the tire is rated for. But you won't be putting more than 40. He's just trying to avoid putting a 10 ply on your wheels

I wonder if it is the same company that refused to rotate my 3000 mile old tires from front to back when I replaced the fronts citing they have to put the newest tires on the rear for "safety" reasons. The car was FWD by the way. I had to have the new ones installed on the rear and then drive away then return for rotation. I just drove away and never went back.

I've got 10 ply LT 265/70R17 Toyo Open Country AT2's on mine and TMPS and the tires are just fine at 37-39 lbs

Regardless of the tire, it is pretty easy to reset the range of the TPS. Don't remember the exact sequence, but I did it when I went back to P rated tires on my Pro from the 8 plys that came on it. Check your owners manual.

The TPMS checks pressure and not volume. It has no way to know what size tire you’re using. It can only determine what pressure you have.

Find a different store. This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

He probably didn't realize that the TPMS can be reset by a press of the button on the dash. Most vehicles actually require a programmer to reprogram the sensors, not all tire shops have the equipment. Not sure why he would turn down the sale of the tires though. Personally, I do not offer warranty on tires that are used in the wrong application (LT tires on a tacoma), but I won't refuse the sale. If you must have a warranty, you can go pay the extra 15% markup at discount tire.

That's like saying I won't put oil in your car because you came into this shop with your oil light on and your going to go passed your oil change interval again. Dumb.

New tires on the rear is actually legit. There was a massive lawsuit over it

I actually wanted BFGoodrich AT but for that size they come with outlined white sidewalls. I know I can put them to the inside BUT I don't want whitewalls if I'm tossing out $1000. So i tried the Coopers then the Goodyear Duratrac ... nope White white white white. The only tire in that size that I know anything about that has black sidewall is that Goodyear MTR 10 ply. I just want black sidewalls. lol

I also have a question about a tire vendor. I bought a 2010 Tacoma 18 months ago. Requested the dealership replace 2 of the tires that were extremely worn. I realize now I should have made them replace all 4. Anyway, now the front 2 need to be replaced. I ordered 2 Goodyear Wrangler HT's to match what the dealership put on. They are E load range. The tire vendor wanted to put on two Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 SL instead. Said the 4 ply was better since I'm not doing any heavy hauling. Is this going to affect my ride? Having two 10 ply and two 4 ply tires on? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

    Exactly this^^^

I tow a trailer and do carry extra weight, so I have 10 ply 265/75/16 KO2’s. Just show them how you can reset the TPMS and it works just fine. Perhaps they don’t want to sell what they don’t have because the sales person won’t get their daily commission.

:facepalm:Dont do it. If you live where there’s snow, the difference in traction between front and rear, plus mix/matching tires that have different wear characteristics will not be good. Is your Taco 4wd? If so, especially don’t do it!

Dang, another example of we don’t have those but I will sell you these instead so I can get the commission ...
