Tire in back of truck?

So...I hate to call myself old, but I dont really get why people put the tire all prop'd up like its on a throne in the back of their truck. Personally I dont really think it looks that great.

(Id rather just have a bed-liner and a toolbox)

But Is it just a cool way to mount the spare? IMO it ruins alot of your bed space...But what do I know haha, My truck isnt too special but I have seen some mean looking trucks with the tire in the back

 

I planne on getting a spare tire rack that easily comes out in case I really need the bed.

 

It's supposed to be for extra ground clearance under the truck.

 

That makes sense, because on my truck, my rears clear alot easier than my fronts(how it is in most cases) So I guess putting the tire back there gives you more clearance for the front...makes sense, but I just dont like the look...

 

This is a typical off road race truck set up. With most race trucks, the "bed area" is all suspension and tire mounts, tied into the roll cage and frame support.

 

Function over form, my friend.

 

And it's faster to get to a spare that's propped up and away from your gear with a giant handle on it waiting to be spun off and put on the truck with an easy to reach location for the busted wheel to be tossed on.

I like this setup because it takes all of 5 seconds to release the ratchet strap and pull the tire down. CAKE!

 

Oh yeah.. my vision out of my rear view is not impaired either. The tire sits lower than the rear seats in the cab.

 

Arizona, I'd that the nfab tire mount? How did you get the ratchet strap black instead of blue?

Yep.. its the Nfab. I spray painted like 5 coats on that mofo. I used hi-temp BBQ paint. Works flawlessly. Its even rained several times over the last few weeks here in 'zona pretty hard and I've had no issues.

 

Dont know if you wheel your truck of not but if your on a trail and blow a tire and the ass end of the truck is on the ground you can get your spare.

 

Doesn't the paint make the strap stiff?

 

It did a little... But its still flexible and what have you.

i think duplicolor makes a rattlecan fabric paint that's supposed to work pretty well.

 

Tiregate is good quality stuff but I wanted to keep my tailgate... I put loose shit in the back and didnt want it sliding it.

 

i have a question that may be stupid but cant ppl just steal the tire? i know u have that bike chain thing on there but arent those easy to cut through?
