I have a 2010 Prerunner I use as a daily driver. I don't haul or tow and stay mostly on pavement. Not long after purchase I traded the stock Dunlaps for a set of Cooper AT2's.
My only complaint was the rough ride of the LT Coopers. I'm due for a new set of tires and the only must-have is an AT. Would I be better off with LT tires or P-rated? Brand is not important, Dunlaps excluded.

I like my Hankook DynaPro AT2
    They are P rated.

If you don’t like a rough ride, I’d say stick to a P rated tire.

An LT tire is going to ride terrible on the Tacoma.
Stick with a P metric tire, the Hankooks are decent for the money but I just got a set of Goodyear Ultra Terrains (Discount tire sells them exclusively).
I've never had a Goodyear tire I liked but these were on sale and I will say they are the nicest AT tires I ever bought. They balanced perfectly first shot, they are amazingly quiet and smooth and they are aggressive. I run them at 29psi.

Lots of people run LT tires and they ride fine, its more air pressure than anything, a P tire at 45 lbs psi is going to suck as well for ride.

Tire pressure is surely the biggest factor, If I run my 1st gen @ 35psi or more it literally "skate" off a washboard road if I don't go slow. But an LT tire is usually considerably heavier, and that weight has a big factor on how the truck will ride.

Another consideration is the rough roads where I live. My tires will be taking a lot of abuse and I was thinking the LT's would hold up little better.

I’d recommend the P rated Cooper AT3/4S. No complaints after 2-3 years on the truck. Great in rain, snow, highway. , gravel roads , etc.

I ran my cooper at3 4s down quickly due to gravel roads, I am now running LT tires simply due to gravel roads.

If its pavement 99% of the time, coopers at34s is a great choice, I liked them for everything but the gravel roads.

IME the LT tires do ride a little worse, but if you're into a lot of off road or even unimproved road travel it is worth it. It sounds like you'd be better off with a P or Standard Load tire. There are lots of good options. These are the most aggressive non-LT tire I've found. Ride is fine, but they do make some noise. I have these in a P rated 265/75/16 on my Tacoma. They meet my needs.

Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain AT | Discount Tire

But if ride and longevity is important just get Michelins. They aren't the most aggressive looking tire, but will serve the needs of most peoples off road use. I have these on my Explorer.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S | Discount Tire

These are what I picked, but there are a lot of good options.
