I just had the wheels on my truck repainted. When I picked it up, the TPMS on the dash was on. I tried resetting it with the button under the steering wheel, but that didn't work. Next I took it to the tire shop, and they replaced a sensor in one of the wheels. But they were able to get the dash sensor to go off. They then told me that they were getting a fault reading saying that maybe it was the receiving unit in the car that was bad. I am a little skeptical because this has happened before and I was told by the same tire shop that the device they use had to be configured to get the light to go off. I called the local Toyota dealership and was told their rates are $185 per hour and that if the unit is bad, it would cost $800 to buy a new unit.

I know that I could use a piece of electrician's tape and cover the light, but I would rather that the darn thing work as designed.

    Any ideas?

    Yeah.
I think you might have a sensor in your spare based on the year. If it's the original sensor, it's likely dead by now. I'd make sure you have 5 good sensors before blaming the receiving unit.
