Amazing how many people set there tires to max psi. All of our work trucks are set there and they spend 90% of the time on dirt. The outside tread is like new mean while the center is worn. They ride like shit too.

I'm always amazed at how many 'pros' set them that high or close to it at tire shops and service centers, too. Whenever I get new tires I have to air them down immediately because they always set them so freakin' high. I had a Discoverer (non ST Maxx) mounted as a spare a few months back and when I got on the road, it was howling like a banshee. Figured it was a shitty loud tire until I checked the PSI and they had put it at nearly 60. At 35 it behaved completely normal.

I've had them set the door jam setting, or 35psi, or the max. Went home one day from tire install. Telling myself these tires ride like shit!! Check pressure and was at 50psi. Like wtf!

Yeah I was referring to the particular 35lbs. max tires I have on my truck. My Lexus RX350's tires say 55lbs. max, the door jamb says 36lbs. and I run those at 39lbs.
The ride on that RX is still butter:)
When I said "strike a balance" in no way did I imply "exactly half" between door and sidewall. You need to judge.

For some reason, my Toyota and Lexus dealers both do this shit. I actually put a hand-written sign on my windshield when I go there "DO NOT TOUCH TIRE PRESSURES"

I don't know. If a tire looks low.......add air. I don't think too much about it.

This. I think I'm sitting at 33psi now and its fine. Those doorjamb numbers are for the stock rugged fail tires truck shipped with. :bananadead:

I run 45 psi all around
It really depends on the tire size and load capacity and the weight of your vehicle ( well what google says )

Door plate says truck came with Passenger tire P225/75/R15 so that is when the 26-29 PSI recommended

An overkill tire was placed by PO LT245/75/R16 load E 10 Ply , those are 80 PSI max , 3,042 lbs per tire max.

I don't know the exact formula but was something like
    truck weight is about
    4,600 / 4 tires = 1,150 pounds
1,150 divide by 3,042 max cap of each then = 0.38
1150/3042= 0.38 psi should be in the tire

    Let's say is heavier , 6000 pounds
    6000/4 tires = 1,500 pound per tire
1500 divide by 3042 =0.493 psi should be in the tire

I tried other less psi 29, 33 , 36 ,40... anything less than 40 ride like a tank, MPG dropped like 15.5 mpg

With 45 PSI assuming I loss 3 psi back to 42 when cold weather, then I get back to peppy ride and the 17 to 17.5 mpg

I got confused myself with the formula above.
I don't know if the result of 0.35 should be substracted from 0.80 PSI
then the correct PSI to run should be 0.45 ( 45 PSI) instead of 35

Anyways... I went down to 35 lbs all around,
the ride is OK with new shocks and alignment,
    last 292 miles in a week \ 18.48 mpg

Undecided between 35 to 45 so next week...
I will do 40 (recommended by discount tire according to my truck model\ weight )
... that's right in the middle of the max PSI ...
    whatever both feels smooth :drunk:

About 15 or less for sand.
Not sure about wheeling on rock psi.

15 is good for rocks, that's what I usually run. E rated 16" tires...I wouldn't run that low on a lesser tire though
