For anybody who's had both 285/75R16 and 255/80R17 (I think that's right?). Which tire size had more road noise? Or were they the same?

It all depends on your tire.

285/75R16 makes way less noise than 255/80R17, but only if you run the white text on the outside. If you run the white text on the inside, they'll make more noise. Especially on Fridays.

Tread design is the factor. Mud terrain-nosier, Hwy-quieter, All terrain-in between. My 285/75/17 KO2's are very quiet, do not hear in cab.

My question is real. My current 285s make a shit ton of noise above 50. My tires are almost due for replacement and I'm deciding on 285 or 255

Tread design is much more important than tire width. But IME width does factor in. When new there is probably little difference, but all tires get louder as they get older and the tread wears down. The wear is less consistent, with wider tires you get high and low spots in the tread, especially on the edges. It is the uneven wear that causes the noise.

I have cooper ST Maxxs now. I don't remember how loud or quiet they were when j first got them, but now that they have 60,000 miles on them they're pretty noisy

I remember seeing a chart of the different tire wear and their causes. Isn't the outer edge fluttering caused by bad balancing?

There are lots of good reasons to go 255/85 instead of 285/75.

i found my st maxx to be really very quiet considering the open tread pattern.

I'm sure there are, but if I did that I'd have to buy new wheels. I'm just weighing my options here

Worn tires make a lot more noise than new tires. Tread pattern is the noisemaker, not the width.
However, if tread pattern and wear is exactly the same, skinny makes less noise than wide.

285 will be louder than a 255, as it has more road contact. Assuming your talking the same tire brand and make.

So why, not being a twat, couldn’t you run 255/85r16? (Instead of 255/80r17 that you mentioned for some reason)
