When you "rotate" your tires, you rotate all four at the same time, so there is NO difference between tires.

What mileage difference? Are you replacing only two tires?

If you only replace 2 of the 4 tires and stagger the replacement you can double the distance of rotation. The centrifugal force of the other two older tires will balance the wear.

i understand some confusion on my part , my language using mileage difference is confusing, and really why i wanted to bring this up. was thinking about it wrong

Although i will add, the teeth really come out here when someone is wrong.

I was wrong, i admit it.

And put the new tires in the front, so the rubber shed by the front tires will be picked up by the rear tires, evening out the wear :rasta:

Yes, I've been doing it this way on my Subaru WRX, where the tire rotations are actually necessary because it has AWD, and had no issues. Great minds think alike.

if you bought from Costco tire rotations are free

if you turn your own wrenches it’s not hard to rotate during an oil change

you do not have to do it every 5k. You have to do it when it is due. Which on most cars is every 5k.

to save time you can use a $3 tread depth gauge, crayon, and take measurements across your treads. If they are the same, you don’t need a rotate yet and it can wait.

if one set is lower than the other experiencing wear, that measurement confirms it is in need of a rotate.

also, truck tires tend to lose their balance faster and more often than cars. This is why Costco rotates and balance includes a balance.
Even if you rotate yourself you still may need a balance. If you are starting to experience shaking in the steering wheel like I am.

while I have been doing rotates when they’re due every so often, I am now due for a balance and don’t have a Hunter machine at home. So I probably have no choice but to take the truck to Costco and pay $20 for that; hopefully they don’t break anything.

any time a vehicle is worked on by a kid making $12/hr there’s about a 50% chance of that happening

People a lot smarter than me figured out that one of these 3 work best. Depending on your vehicle and tires.

    tire_rotation.gif

Although honestly, I can't see that either the left or center one really matters. Just do it the same every time. The one on the right only applies to directional tires.

If you do it every 5000 miles when you reach 20,000 miles each tire would have been on each corner and will have spent equal time turning in each direction. At 40,000 each tire will have been on each corner twice and rotated equal miles in each direction. At 60,000, if you make it that far, you'll have done so 3 times. If you wait to do it every 10,000 miles you will be at 40,000 before each tire gets to each corner. And unless you get 80,000 miles out of the tires you'll never do it twice.

If you have street tires 10,000 miles is probably OK. More aggressive tires need to be rotated more often. If left on the front too long, or rotating in the same direction too long they develop irregular wear patterns that cannot be corrected easily. Rotating more often prevents this. On a 4X4 truck I don't want to go much over 5000 miles.

Also, if you have a 4X4 it is imperative that all 4 tires be the same diameter. If you have 2 tires excessively worn and 2 that are almost new you effectively have 2 different axle ratios. Operating in 4X4 will damage your 4X4 components. Even a 2wd vehicle can have issues with different size tires on the drive axle. And a worn tire is basically one size smaller than it was when new.

There is a good argument to not truly rotate tires on a front wheel drive vehicle. The front wheels will wear out a lot sooner than the rears. When they are gone, buy 2 new tires for the front and keep driving. The 2 rear tires are essentially nothing more than trailer tires and will last a long time if just left on the rear. And since only the front tires are getting power a size difference won't matter.

AWD, vehiles are often rotated like the one on the right directional tires diagram.

I don't remember where I read it but I thought the drive tires are supposed to be crossed. I seem to wear them out before I get a chance to rotate them so I haven't done it in years.

Heck, I rotate my tires every 3k. Same time I change my oil. But, then again, I just stop at Big O and have them do it so my tire warranty stays valid. Which is good because I'm 1/2 way through the warranty but 7/8 through the tread.

In the end, cross rotation is great, but you get a lot of people complaining as the tire wears in on reverse rotation.

So #1 is all I do now (on customers vehicles). That way the rear tires, regardless of car, get the aggressive tread reversal, and the new front tires don't send unwanted feedback to the operator.

I do a complete X on all my vehicles, and any troubled vehicle. (with non-directional)

#2 is the worst, and makes no sense. Do a full cross at that point.

I'm convinced that the reversal of rotation is the most important thing, so I'm doing a Z pattern. I could be overthinking, but I'm having good results. :notsure:

I'm just going to say it: It seems like every time I had/have the tires rotated on any of my vehicles, I had problems afterwards with pulling, vibration, noise, uneven wear: name it. I stopped doing it in the 80's. It's a conspirancy. <($10 word alert there) ;) "slipped belt" "you need a new tire", "you need a 4-wheel alignment" "You should have alternated between an "X" cross pattern and a front to back same-side routine." "Them tires you bought are wicked-crappy..." Really.?? "YOU'RE wicked-crappy you little &$#* ! :smack: < (backhander)

I like Michelin tires: always get 50,000 minimum out of them. I can live with that if it eliminates the drama with noise, vibration, harshness, weird wear and condescending BS. (YMMV)

I’ve been doing the #2 pattern on my accord as recommended per the manual, got 100k out of my last set of tires :notsure:
