I’m looking get Cooper AT3 XLTs and would prefer 285/70-17’s for a 2.5” 2nd gen Taco. 80/20 street/ off-road. I have 265/70-17s now with only minor full lock reverse mud flap rub.

I did do a fair bit of reading late last nite- am I right that this will require pinch mod and modest trimming but not major surgery?

    Thanks in advance.

Trim plastic, hammer pinch weld seam, CMC if your going to wheel. I would recommend you gusset your spindles also, they bend. Good luck with your truck.

They will rub body mount for sure. Especially if the 32s are already rubbing

Quick follow up. How severe is the rubbing- is it drivable after installation to get to my garage to work on (note to self - buy a bigger hammer).

If you have stock wheels they will more than likely rub against the spindles. You won't even be able to put them on without spacers.

You just dont do full lock, so a multi point turn instead of full lock.

Hammer isnt enough, you need to cut the body mount with a saw, cut off wheel etc.

I omitted to say that there are spacers on there now- 2" I believe. I have a Gen 1 as well and they are slightly different and I have trouble remembering because i only occasionally tinker with them.

Spacers usually cause more rub than usual, if you're already rubbing on 265s, you're going to rub on 285s. I've had 285s since have had my truck with aftermarket wheels and no spacers, and my tires rubbed the most at the bottom of the front fender flares both in front of and behind the tire. If you don't mind trimming plastic, then it's doable. I would just take note of where the paint was rubbed off, pull out my pocket knife and trim until there was no more missing paint. If you're just doing forest service roads, I wouldn't worry about the body mounts too much, but if you're doing Moab type trails, you're going to rub the body mount, especially with the spacers.

I seldom if ever go full lock btw so the 265's for my purposes are no issue.

If not doing Moab and mostly 80% hwy and 20 Georgia red dirt roads, maybe go with ATC LTs or LT 4Ss even and stick with 265/70 or 275/70. I see the from the tire size calculator the measurable differences between 275 and 265- what are the practical differences - just less of the 285 mods, or more like the 265s which require no mods. I know that we are splitting hairs here somewhat.

When I was on 16x8 -12mm offset w/ 285/75/16 I rubbed on the mudflaps, front fender liner, and cab mount at the time

I would say the 275s will at least still rub that front mudflap, other than that, it's hard to say without buying and trying. I believe the largest tire you can fit stock is a 265, so anything larger than that will require some kind of cutting/hammering.

    I ended up ordering

    265/70R-17 COOPER DISCOVERER ROAD+TRAIL AT

Apparently they replace the AT3 4S which my son has and really likes. Also found an early review that was quite favorable. I'll have them next week and we'll see.

New R&T are on and night and day from the Evolutions. Silky smooth and QUIET on the highway. Great in the rain, but not been off-road yet. I think they will be fine for my usage. IMG_7048.jpg

@Ritter would love to hear your take on these tires after some off road use. The tire is so new, any information is quite helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post.
