Your sports teams confuse me. I'm sticking with that size tire as well. Did you end up going E load? I've read a lot of bad things about them in how they handle / road noise, but coming from a WRX.. I don't think it can be that awful.

My Firestone Winterforce tires are E load and they are obnoxiously loud. I have to turn the radio up the whole way when I put them on in the winter.

Many tire websites will give a rating for road noise and there are lots of tires rated better than the Firestone Winterforce, but they are the only tire I have experience with. My Winterforces are also studded, which doesn't help with noise.

What's wrong with my sports teams?

I went with a 2.5/1.5 lift and 285's and it's too much for me. My tires rub where the mudflap is attached in the wheel well, when I am turning and hit a bump. 285's probably need a full 3 inch lift, depending on your rims. I commute a long way and my mileage has gone to crap. Probably dropped 2-3 mpg. When these tires wear out, I will probably drop to 265's and remove the rear lift and drop the front to 2 inches. I love the way my truck looks, but with a 50 mile one way commute I need better mileage. I know a guy they left his suspension alone and just put new rims and 265 tires and it looks great.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Didn't heed the warnings from the experienced guys in threads like these, did you?

^ some of us just like to test stuff out for ourselves, at the expense of our wallets.

That being said without my lift and tires I would have never gotten "over" wanting a lift.

    Experience is a great teacher!

I've got a stove that is probably hot, wanna test that out as well? Or maybe you can try this hammer to the head, I think I know how that'll end but I'll let you test it.

well I'm not sure whom your god is...
    nor what 40+ mph means

but my tacoma rolls as fast as it can normally (rpm governer)
regardless as to whether the diff is locked or unlocked.

The Toyota god does have me slowing down to 5 mph
to shift into low range tho'

I also avoid hitting the throttle when on black ice at speed
    so's I don't meet my maker prematurely.

    But that's gonna hafta' wait
'cause I'm not interested in that meeting just yet.

I use 265/70/17 c rated bfg ko2 and I'm very happy. Mileage is still good and I've taken it into the dry forest roads with pretty steep inclines 2wd. So far no issues. This size can be used without lifting.

I suspect this hits too close to home for you:

You can't shift into 4Lo at 5mph you have to be fully stopped and in neutral as the transfer case switches to low range gear. I can still lock my rear diff while in 4H and moving.

Bypass your 4 wheel drive controller. I'd bet a beer it's the exact same wiring diagram.

Denny, I learned a stove was hot by touching one as a kid, and I learned a hammer hurt 15 years ago as a framing apprentice. There are a lot of things in life that you learn by doing. Some of us get our hands dirty or take a hit to the wallet to learn a lesson we will remember.

We're talking about tire sizing for 85% on road and 15% off road performance. Most of us are recommending he stay stock or go with tires with better on road performance, without compromising too much off road capability. There are plenty of threads on lifting a Tacoma if he chooses to go that route as well, with scores of guys and gals that simply like the look but never use them off road.
