Picture attached for reference. I’m far overdue for some new rubber. I replaced the stock wheels with some 17” 5th Gen 4Runner wheels.

I’m looking at getting some all terrains but not sure what size would be best without rubbing. Currently, they are 265/70/17 but very bald highway tires. I’m afraid if I throw some ATs on at that size it’ll rub on the fenders with the extra nubs. In the past, this has happened even when keeping the same stock size tires. I’d rather not do any trimming.

I know others have mounted 265s on their stock 16" wheels without issue but I'm wondering how much that would change on 17" wheels.

    Any recommendations?

265/70/17 are almost identical in both height and width to 265/75/16. If you look at specs they are within 1 or 2 tenths of an inch. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with either on factory rims. Wider rims, spacers, or a different wheel spacing might be a problem

Among different tire manufacturers there are minor differences in actual tire sizes even though they have the same size stamped on them. E rated tires with very aggressive mud treads will be slightly larger and might be an issue.

There is no standard measurement for tread width. 265 is the width of the sidewall in millimeters and is pretty darn close on all 265's. But the tread width can vary by as much as 1 inch or slightly more. You just have to check manufacturer's specs. But I don't think that would be a problem either.

I’m on Firestone Destination XT 265/75/16 with ome 3” lift. The only rubbing I’m getting is on low speed tight radius left turns. Passenger tire makes contact with low tire side bumper lip. If the bumper wasn’t out of whack sitting lower and rearward it would be fine. So based off the info from Marshall, you’d likely be fine. Mine should eventually fix itself ;)
