I apologise in advance if this is a stupid question, but when one wheel slips and is spinning, I hear an almost grinding sound that comes from the truck. Is that normal?

Mine does this. If I turn I to a parking lot that has a steep ramped curb. The truck kind of sways left to right then I hear this crazy noise your talking about. Also you can feel it in the brake pedal. Check to see if your traction control light is on when it's making the noise. It sounds like shits breaking but I think it's normal.

normal. during normal driving I just leave it as is, during snowy weather and slick road up to our house I turn off all that stuff, cuz we need all the speed we can get to get up our hill sometimes especially when its really snowy and slick.

Normal - Assuming - what you're hearing is Anti Lock Braking / Traction control.

For example, the down-hill descent function on the Toyota 4 Runners uses the anti-lock braking system and sounds like the entire front end of the truck is being torn to pieces by Hulk.

    However,

If you're stuck in deep snow or something, and one wheel is spinning while the other isn't, and hearing a grinding sound something is definitely wrong.

if you ever get a chance to use the crawl control, then you'll really be hearing the noise like crazy.
