Hi, I've put 8000 miles on my 96 Tacoma, it has 130000 on it. When I turn the steering wheel right or left it makes a squealing sound like a car turning its wheels on a tile floor. It will also do it when I turn but at a slow speed. It also makes the same sound when I hit a bump but at a shorter duration ( about 1 second). I have checked all
the belts and tightened them. I changed the power steering fluid because
it looked real dirty. I jacked it up off it's front tires and rocked them both
and there is no play either vertically or horizontally. Alignment runs straight
and there is no uneven tire wear. I have never taken it off the road so nothing could be bent. Just in case someone asks when applying the brakes it does not change anything. Anyone have any idea's.
    Thx
    Jim

My steering wheel is just starting to do this as well.

Ok this is not a steering column problem, the noise comes from the undercarriage , there is no shaking or vibration with the truck anywhere just this real annoying squeal, it will turn heads a block away.

This might sound stupid but are you tires correct psi?
    Is your 4x4 on maybe?

Is it the tires that are squealing or does it sounds like a belt or motor squeal? If its the tires, do they also clunk when you hit a bump or when you drive over a curb? If so, your lower ball joints are bad.

Does it only happen when the wheel is turn all the way to one side. Because could it be the belt slipping on the powers steering pump?

.No it does not happen when the steering is at, it's full extent, it does however make the clunking sound when a hit a small bump or pothole.
I would think if it where the ball joints wouldn't the tires rock side to side
when it's lifted off the ground. Hard to believe it could be that, my 89 re-22
had 500000 miles on it when I junked it and all the steering was intact
nothing went bad. Also it looks like the belts are all new.

Sounds like ball joints. With the tire jacked up, insert a prybar between the ball joint and LCA and have someone pry while you watch for movement. You usually can't "feel" movement just by pulling on the wheel. If you could, then that would mean that there was nothing or very little holding your spindle onto the control arms.

Changing the power steering fluid because it was real dirty, might have been to little to late. Belts are tight and look good as per OP.

There are some threads on cleaning the return? line screen on that pump. Do a bit of a search and it should come up. That might be another option to try before replacing parts.

If it is the pump, with slight care it should have lasted way past 138K miles, But your the second owner and I assume you don't know how they took care of underhood stuff or the overall truck service.

my 99 has the same problem, said it might be part of the power steering pump, something isnt diverting fluid correctly like a bypass?

Took it to sears today , they say it's the lower ball joints and outer tie rods and a sway bar link. I have never had to replace any steering components so i'm not to knowledgeable about it. But my 89 22re had 500000 miles on it and all I had to do was replace the front shocks. My Tacoma only has 130000.

Do the replacement parts that I need come with grease fittings ( or that I can order) like the 22re. BTW sears wants $800 plus tax with an alignment to fix it. (Cupertino Ca.)

    Thx for all the idea's
