How’d they fail? Cut on a sharp rock?

Sidewall puncture on a rock and then the sidewall tore from the stress of the puncture.

Keep in mind this was a road that you see crossovers on and stock SUVs.

Looked pretty silly having to stop to change a tire on these modified offroad vehicles when you see a Kia Sorento on the trail.

I would have a hard time pinning that on the brand. With few exceptions tires don't have sidewall protection and a typical 6 ply BFG, Nitto, etc will be just as susceptible to a sidewall puncture. Coopers have their place in the market and it isn't substandard construction that make them a less expensive alternative.

That’s not the intent of this discussion. The coopers failed. Period.

The twist is I don't need big heavy off road tires. 99% of my driving is on the street and I'm looking for a tire that performs that task best.

The right rock in the right place will poke a hole in any of them. That tire failure was not the tires fault, just bad luck or careless driving.

I've been happy with Coopers, but they aren't the only good tire. It sounds like to me you need something LESS aggressive than Coopers. The Michelins are probably going to be your best bet.

Sounds like driver error. If it’s such an easy trail how’d he manage to not avoid a sharp rock? I don’t blame the Coopers one bit.

My C Load, Goodyear Duratracs look very aggressive, but are relatively quite, considering. They offer the 3 peak snow designation, hence I sold my winter tires. They have one of the best rain ratings out there.

But they do look as aggressive as K02's.

The rock wasn’t that sharp to be honest. We have no idea how it even punctured on the rock.

Nothing the driver can do, your statement is just ignorance, considering it’s his first puncture like that in 20 years.

I also need tires, my factory 265 65 17 toyo have about had it. Is anyone on here actually running the 265 70 17 tires? I was considering that size as they seem to fit stock just fine and seem to be cheaper. Any thoughts? TIA

widely available in almost every model, and you'll often have a choice of C or E with that size (265/70-17). fits stock.

Are you attributing the fault to the brand of tire? You do realize that with the exception of true truck tires that sidewalls all made the same. Layers of rubber and some sort of plastic fiber. They are not designed for strength. They are not designed for abrasion or puncture protection. It seem kind of odd that you admit that you don't know how it happened, but blame the explicitly. I'm no personal fan of Cooper tires, and would never buy them, but I wouldn't ever discourage them because of a freak accident that sounds like the driver probably caused it in a situation that pretty much any other tire would have failed.

I simply pointed out that I saw a tire failed and someone asked me what type it was so I answered.

The comment about "we don't know how" is the fact that the tire failed so easily. It's more of an admission of surprise than lack of understanding.

As mentioned previously, there is nothing the driver can do. We all drove the same line and we all offroad significantly more than anyone else here. Blaming the driver for a puncture demonstrates a fundamental lack of knowledge in offroad driving.

just keep in mind the stock tires from the factory only weight about 32lbs. so keeping the new tire weigh close to that youll get maximum MPGs and power to the rear wheels on a daily driver
