Hey y’all! I’m having some tire trouble. I bought the 2020 Tacoma TRD off-road in October. It came w all terrain Goodyear Wrangler 265/70/16. I have 14,000 miles on it and I noticed uneven outer tire wear. I noticed at my first and Then again at second service and each time they told me “the tires need to be rotated” ok. No prob. That’s part of standard service. I’ve had them rotated twice. I have the extended truck warranty and the tires had a warranty. But tires and alignment benefits expire at 12,000 miles. At the 5,000 and 10,000 mile service I expressed my concerns over the wear. I went in today and they told me the wear is because it needs an alignment....... I need honest advice here. Am I being a Karen here? The tires have uneven wear and they are now telling me it’s an alignment issue. Because they can’t say I haven’t rotated them. They want to charge me for it. Which they ignored my previous requests to check the alignment. even when I brought it to their attention. Also, they’ve been inflating them to 30psi which seems low... I feel angry about it....but I don’t want to be unreasonable. Just seems awfully early to be worried about tire wear. I bought new for the first time and so far it’s been a headache:/

Welcome to the forum. More than likely an alignment issue but depending on the wear pattern it could be an improper inflation issue. Pics? By the way 30psi is what Toyota recommends (see the driver’s door sticker).

Thank you!! Happy to be here. This is my 4th Toyota! 3rd Tacoma. They are all worn exactly the same...I definitely thought it was under inflation. But it’s just the outer edge. There’s basically no wear anywhere but the outer edges. Terrible pics!! It’s dark out!!

It's an upsell tactic, most all terrains have shoulder wear and its hard to prevent.

My truck is aligned once a year, and I cross rotate 3 times a year, and I have edge wear. It's just part of a truck with tires that have lugs.

I would say unless you feel any abnormal issues don't worry.

Also make sure they do cross diagonal rotations, not front to back, this helps with shoulder wear.

Edit: Duratracs are known for this, its a gnarly tire that was designed for large service trucks with weight, not a tacoma.

It probably is the alignment. My tires wore out around 18,000 miles if it makes you feel any better.

I’m going to say it’s the tires. Same tires on my wife’s 4Runner and same problem. They’ve been rotated on schedule each time and at around 30,000 miles they became annoyingly loud. The outside lugs have worn so uneven that at 5mph it feels like I’m rolling on octogons. One is high, next is low. I’ll never get these tires again.

Well, the only thing is. It’s seems like there’s some kind of issue causing uneven wear...it’s either
    A-underinflation or
    B-alignment
Maybe it’s normal wear? Uneven and so early?

I used recommend 30 psi and stock TRD OR tires neededt to be replaced from wear after 30k miles. I thought alignment was the issue but I replaced new wheel and tires and added a lift when I found out the tires were shot. So I'll never know....but I suspect my stock alignment was off.

An alignment is way cheaper than new tires. Stealership is gonna cost more when they tell you they won't cover it.

Ugh. What a painnnnn I don’t want to spend anymore time at the dealership. It’s terrible and I feel bad for the techs and I try not to lose my temper, and haven’t, but damn!!!!! Just don’t want to worry or premature replacement over and over again.

dealers......tyre shops low inflate tyre so that they wont get complaints
from them ' thumping '................. especially over the Many comcrete strips at speed

simply put the ' tyre ' ride softer
no less there is a sacrifice to mileage
30 psi seems low to me altho i dont know the size or brand o tyre !!!

front tyre inflated properly will have more psi than rear tyres unless loaded
    ............... real world example
my access cab i4 SR = 4000lbs me included (certified scale )
alittle less tha 1700 rear weight / 2300 front
    simple math = weight bias

no less Radial tyres as bias tyres will ' crown ' at hi-way speeds
in other words a direct result centrifugal force= wear more in middle 1/3 than outer edges
iv run sooooooo many 1000+mile overbites gettin back from racetracks

    i use a tyre ' depth 'gauge
when fronts are wearing correctly................. i find after many years of checking
    mostly hi-speed hi-way travel
the rears will run4-6 psi LESS..............resulting in the tyre running flat across NO LESS thats UNLOADED

i do air up if loaded or trailering
    resulting in increased longevity/mileage

i dont hold this as a ' rule o thumb ' poured in concrete to apply & work for everyone
careful observation/practice it works 4 me

i only get front end alignment when i spoon on new tyres
new tyres.......dirrectly onto the rack Front End Alignment..............shops are only 1/3 mile apart !!!!!!!

    good luck

That's not a toyota package since it looks like a duratrac tire to me. No Toyota comes with Duratrac tires. Must be a dealer installed accessory.

Outer edges also wore out on mine. After oil change the shop I took it to wouldn't rotate because of the wear.

Seems like you have done everything right to me. You brought it up twice and they didnt care, now your tires are showing uneven wear.

The difficult part is proving to the dealer you told them about the alignment twice and they ignored it. I think you should try talking to the manager first and be nice.

    That’s not stock size either, should be a 265/70 R16 ?

I was going to say. When did they switch from the Goodyear Adventurer w/Kevlar to Duratracs?

Nor stock size. Since when is 2657516 stock?
I would never inflate tires to 30. My door specs say 32 and I run them at 34 for daily driving, my preference.
However it sounds like alignment issues, as 30 psi shouldn’t give you uneven wear as that isn’t low enough to be considered under inflation. Especially if all tires are at that pressure.
You got any extra weight anywhere in the truck?

the pedestrian mom/pop tire shops are NOT OFF ROAD EXPERTS

    4X4s ....Lug Tires........HiLifts require a different perspective that Altimas/camrys

    even brand names
    tire rack
    discount tire
    Firestone
are better at upselling & replacing

the Toyota dealer will not likely be able to set up a 3inch hi lift

more than likely there IS a good 4X4 Off Road shop in the area
    it wont be cheap

    better chances at being correct
