OP ultimately this cannot be decided by the rest of us as we can give you 50 million reasons to pick one over the other...

you need to weigh how much youre REALLY going to be offroad and in need of a mud terrain...and if you arent...if the looks of such tire outweighs the streetability of that mud tire

Personally i feel that if you have to ask if you should get a/ts or m/ts

    the answer is a/ts

those who need m/ts know it

look into other a/t tires too...dont focus on just the BFG...you pay a premium for that name and there are plenty of other good tires out there

I've lived vicariously with the M/Ts on my best friend's FJ. They are awesome in the rough stuff, but kind of a pain in daily life. They make a TON of noise, which will tire you while driving (I'm not 18 anymore), they don't do well in the rain or snow and they are wearing very quickly. The tread blocks are just too big for good rain and snow performance.

In short, you can get 90% of the off-road performance but something resembling creature comforts with the A/Ts. It's a no brainer if these are to be your dailies.

    Too few to list.
Keep in mind though, if you're mostly street you're not gonna get much out of the km2s mileage and use wise.

according to chesters link...that would be a negative on mileage warranty for AT tires

keep in mind that many, if not most companies are not going to warranty a tire mileage-wise if its designed for offroad use

    +1

If there is a warranty and your tires do not reach the specified mileage, if anything they will only prorate the difference towards a new set of tires. What this means is you may save $20/per tire on your next purchase.

As for where to buy, check out tire prices online, and then hit any reputable tire store and they should price match. I've purchased my last 4 sets of wheels/tires from Discount and they have matched/beat the cheapest prices I could find online.

I guess the question in my mind is how much wheeling do you actually do? If we're talking ultra-casual, like you want to do it more but you live in a bad area and work a lot, so it ends up being once every other month or so, the total cost of ownership doesn't make sense to me.

Just some crude estimate numbers, to put MPG in perspective:

National average gas price for regular unleaded, 12/28/09: $2.607/gal

For the sake of argument, let's say you buy new, have only one set of wheels, and get 50k miles out of these tires. Let's assume T/A's and M/T's will last equally long.

Further making up numbers, let's say you would get about 18mpg mixed in the T/As and 15mpg in the M/Ts.

Over the life of the tires, you'll burn through 2777 gallons of gas in the T/A's, vs. 3333 gallons of gas in the M/T's.

So, yeah, fuck the planet, whatever. Assuming gas prices don't go back up (I suspect they will in the ~2-3 years it will take you to go 50k miles), that's a total price difference of $1736.26.
