TIRE WEIGHTS

    Hello Forum,

    I am finally getting a set of 17" 6 spoke FJ alloy wheels (26lbs each, I have read) for my '08 DCSB.
    I currently have stock steel wheels (25lbs each, I have read) with 265/75r16 BFG A/T's, (10 ply, 54lbs).

    I am looking at getting:
    275/70r17 in either BFG A/T (10 ply, 55lbs)
    or
    275/70r17 Cooper Discover AT3 (6 ply, 47lbs).

    My question is: Going from my current set-up to either of these tires, will I notice a difference in performance, gas? It's only .5" more in overall diameter.
    Or should I go with 265/70r17's?

    From internet pics it looks to me as if the BFG has a wider foot print than the Cooper but I am wondering if the 8 pound per tire weight difference & 2 less plies will be a noticeable difference in weight and ride.

    BTW, I have Billie 5100's with the front set at 1.75 so I realize that those alone will stiffen the ride.

    Yes to gas they are taller&wider and the tread more than likely will play a factor too. I lost 2MPG on mine and the weight all around was the same and I just went from a 265 65 17 to a 265 70 17. Yes they will ride a little stiffer as I have the same setup w/ the billies but not a bad ride feels like a truck :)

    Also, you will have to do some trimming w/ the 275's

    Thats true. It does feel like a truck. The original shocks on my Prerinner made it feel sloppy.

    While weight is an issue there is another that most people do not consider. The larger the foot print (wider the tire) the more friction. The more friction the more it takes to role them. Most people lose MPG because of the foot print. Also the composition of the tire can have properties that increase the friction thus less MPG.
    They do make tires that are called high mileage tires with special compounds, but I do not know if they make them in the sizes you are considering. Usually there is a trade off for traction verses mileage. I have a set of high MPG tires on my Corolla. It is rated at 41 HWY and I have gotten 49.3. Mixed driving I usually get around 44. It boils down to choosing between traction with a tire that wears faster and MPG with a tire that lasts longer.

    That is VERY true savedone. All of those factors affect ride, gas, & handling. I just found out that the 265/70r17 is available in a 6ply rating "C", weighs 47lbs, & looks just as wide as most 275's due to the squared edge design. Looks like I'll be going with those.

    Plus, they come with white lettters which (I forgot to mention earlier) I prefer over black walls.
