17” wheels gives you the chance to run 275/70/17, which is the unicorn size. The very largest diameter, non-rubbing, non-pizzacutter tire you can run on these trucks with no rubbing. They also are still a proper mounting width for a 7” wide Toyota rim.

All about personal preference and options at the end of the day.

There are some incredible 16” options out there, which typically come at a lower cost for both rims and tires.

17”s get you more wheel options, as well as tire sizing options, as many have mentioned, but obviously at a higher cost.

Regarding tires, biggest thing to ensure is that you are matching the tire you want with the application you are going to be using it in.

Many AT options have better off-road functionality at the cost of higher road noise and a higher price point.

For references, here is a show off thread for wheels and tires:

Are you sure? Most threads on TW say 265/70/17 is the biggest you can go on 17's without starting to rub. I don't have personal experience to support the claim.

I have 275/70/17 K02’s on my truck, with factory mudflaps, and zero rubbing at full flex.

The key with this size is to run the narrow 7” Toyota OEM wheels, like the 4Runner pro wheels. Also, the K02s always run a little smaller than other tire makes.

With wider wheels it may be a problem for sure, but not with these wheels, and the K02 275/70/17’s

I've ordered a set of 265/75/R16 Toyo Open Country AT III's. Using the stock rims. I'm really hoping they don't rub!

Will the Toyo at3s 265/75 rub on a 16x8 rim?

Are you lifted? Unrelated, those gunmetal wheels look slick.

thanks. Toyota makes great looking wheels.

I have under 2” of lift all round on Billstein 5100s and an addaleaf.

The lift was not installed to prevent rubbing, just to give me more clearance from the ground. The tires don’t rub even when fully stuffed and turning.

No wheel spacers, no CMC, factory mudflaps.

Sitting on 16" methods right now and have enjoyed the small bit of extra side will when I air down. Haven't had any issues finding tires so far!

17 inch wheels allow you to run larger brakes when you’re tire size and weight start to impact performance braking performance.

    16's for me. 3 reasons...

    1. cost
    2. extra sidewall
    3. weight - with 285/75/16's my wheel/tire combo is "only" 77 lbs

Love my 16’s, but the tires selections available are limited. If I could swap out to the same setup with 17’s, I probably would.

My 16’s are about 19.5 lbs without the bolts.

What options are there in 17 that you can't get in 16? I've read this anecdotally but never seen examples.

SCS wheels ! I think FN wheels also.

I would consider 17” FN FX pro wheels, both are quality wheels and fairly light. (They don’t come in 16.
