Ah, my favorite Boatswain's mate (or where you a Boiler tech?) chiming in. Not really sure what you point is except ignorance. I have threads on my shock body. Are you saying I should be concerned? Allow me to educate you that ICON makes an aluminum UCA that many people run here without issue. Hell the Bilstein's 5100 spring perch is held in place by a thin aluminum clip. I doubt you are aware, but those fully adjustable control arms are designed for a vehicle with a v8 with a steel block and heads easily weighing in at 1000lbs more than a Tacoma. I suggest you jump on a muscle car forum and tell them that you have deemed that configuration inferior and tell SPC that they should stop making them.

Who knows, maybe you are right that we have pushed the limits of innovation and we have exhausted all ideas? As the great Rogers and Hammerstien shared with us "Everything's up to date in Kansas City, They gone about as fer as they can go"

I thought they were very interesting, the adjustable uca. Buts let’s also remember the muscle cars you speak of usually are only going in straight lines, so while there is plenty of force applied to the arms it’s not the same so that is not a good comparison in any way.

I thought 5100's had a hardened spring steel snap ring?

Yeah but it's in shear, it'd be like trying to cut that snap ring w scissors.

The manufacturers of those UCAs make forged steel UCAs for off road use. You should call them up and explain to them how stupid they are.

OP, Did you get anywhere with this yet? I just had new UCAs installed today and I’m having the same issue. Mine isn’t hitting the CM, but it’s a lot closer than it was with the stock UCA.

I installed my JBA high caster UCAs this morning and drove it to the alignment shop. On the way there it was rubbing like a mfer. I was turning heads but not in a good way. I wasn't rubbing near as bad on the OEM UCAs.

Got the alignment done and it is good to go. I haven't stuffed the tires yet but plan to soon to see if I need to CMC or just trim. Running 285/70R17 with a 17 x 8.5 0 offset.

I have jba high caster UCAs and same size tires but 17x9 -12 offset and no rubbing. Yours should definitely not rub. Check alignment sheet and see if caster is set to 4+ degrees and you won’t need to cut anymore.

Yep caster is above 4 deg on both sides. When I said good to go I meant I am not rubbing after alignment.

Yeah it was sketchy. I decided to pass on stopping for lunch on the way there because that would have been quite a few more added turns

I also have 285s, 17x9 wheels with -12 offset. I’m not rubbing but the tire is definitely much closer to the CM than it was before I had the Icon UCAs installed. The alignment feels really great. The tech said that he would put the caster as high as possible which should be around 4 or so. But did that high caster place the tire closer to the CM? How do I get the tire to move more forward? It’s too close to the CM for my liking.

It did Not place it closer the the cm, what did was the the new wheel width and offset, because the scrub radius is in an entirety new spot.

This is probably already known, but I just found out why the tires rub with aftermarket UCAs. I called Icon, they said that the built-in caster meant to improve alignments pushes the tire closer to the CM or rear fender well area. So, my dilemma is resolved. I have about 4.5 caster and my drivers tire rubs on CM when the tire turned in reverse only. I had zero rubbing with stock UCAs.
To fix this I guess you have to have adjustable aftermarket UCAs.

I’d double check your alignment with 4.5 degrees you shouldn’t rub. What size tire are you running?

Maybe you’ll have different results, but my front lift is about .25” higher now with the new UCAs and new coilovers and it just now started rubbing after the aftermarket UCAs were installed. With stock UCAs I had about 1.5” of clearance and now I have about 2mm.
Aftermarket UCAs really push that tire back towards the CM. My fingers are crossed for you.
