I have a 2014 Tacoma. Rough country 3” suspension life. I put 33 12.50 20’s on it and had barely any rubbing. I had to trim off maybe an inch of the corner of the fenders. It wouldn’t rub at all unless steering was maxed out. The tires were a cheap brand suretrac wide climber. I rode on them for 3 years. I just got new tires. Exactly the same size and they rub bad when turning. I thought it may be the alignment so I took it in. They couldn’t do the alignment because I needed new lca’s. So I bought some and installed them and took it back. Got it aligned and now they rub even worse. Like when I turn maybe 25-30 percent they are hitting the fenders bad. Any thoughts? And I checked both tires and they are both 33” overall diameter

I’m betting the caster is on the low side. Side note I find it difficult that 33-12.50 20s barely rubbed. Do you have a pic of the alignment #s?

Trust me they barely rubbed at all unless I turned all the way left or right. I wish I had pics of how little I trimmed off. I researched forever and seen everyone saying they had rubbing with 33s. But yea here’s a pic of the numbers

Yep. Horrible. They set toe and let it go. If your on factory ucas I’d replace them. But that alignment is really bad.

Yeah I’m still riding on stock uca’s. I’ve never learned alignment stuff I just thought it was odd my other 33s didn’t run the same way these do. I did get the lca’s off Amazon so I really thought that was the problem. Will uca’s help with the caster or do I need something else?

Yes.if you buy ucas that are adjustable or have built in caster it will help greatly. But you still need a good alignment guy. Some techs just don’t understand how on these trucks the caster and camber set up effect one another. With the caster #s you have the truck is gonna want to wander, bump steer is gonna be bad and the over driving characteristics just won’t be good at all.

yeah I’m going to get new uca’s I was just more worried about the rubbing. I can’t turn a corner or turn into a parking space without the tires sounding like are ripping my fenders off and I never had that happen before these tires. These and the others measure 33” overall but the other ones were 13/32 brand new and these are 16/32 brand new so I thought maybe that was it lol

A good tech should be able to get you at least 1.5 caster and still keep camber in spec with factory ucas. That would help. But new ucas is definitely the way to go.

JBAs current version I believe is good from 0-4” of lift. SPC is another but some techs have difficulty with them. I can speak for JbA I have them and they’ve been great. Zero issue with them.

SPC UCAs have more clearance than stock and I assume the JBAs will too.

So after talking to a tire shop they said overall diameter of tires is measured between the tread not the outside of tread. He’s saying it’s rubbing because my other tires were 13/32s and these are 16/32s

The theoretical difference between 13/32" and 16/32" of tire tread is ~3/32" or .093".

Whoever told you that being the cause for tire rubbing is either clueless or intentionally dishonest.

Either way they're full of shit.

I know I didn’t seem like it was that much. It’s just weird none of this rubbing started until I got these tires. Both 33 12.50 20 all terrain

You put ~315s on your Tacoma and are surprised you are rubbing? People talk about 285s and having to CMC so they do not rub and you're at 317.5 (12.50) and you are surprised? What wheels are you running and what is the offset?

    1.png

Edit: I don't mean to come across as a dick here so please assume positive intent.... did someone suggest to you 12.50 tires would work without issue on your Taco? Did you do any investigation into what width tires these IFS rigs could accommodate without modification? I ask because most people know exactly what they are getting into when they try to stuff 12.50s or 305+mm tires under their Taco.

Quit talking about what was and deal with what is.

As @gotoman1969 says you need a shop that can actually do a real alignment.

Im surprised bc my other 33s didn’t rub unless I turned as far as it could go. I had to cut an inch off the bottom or we of my fender and I heated up the wheel well plastic in the front about 2 inches and pushed it in then there was no rubbing. The wheels are Moto metal mo970. I can’t remember if they are 9 or 10 inches wide I’ll look. -24 offset

I’m not offended. I researched like crazy and was expecting to rub and have to cut and trim and all that. But when I had to trim that little and everything was fine I was surprised and happy with it.

Got it. And your other 33's were 12.50s not 10.50s? I knew I was missing something because no one was discussing tire width as the primary culprit. If you were on 33 x12.50s before please disregard my comment -- you had already modified your rig to accommodate that wide frigging meats. Will be following this thread to see what root cause ends up being. Please keep us updated.
